Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

one of my co-workers caught a 24 1/2 inch largemouth.  the photos show it was that big on a ruler..  any idea what it would have weighed.  he caught it in August.  since i specialize in 14 1/2 inch bass i told him i had no idea.

good news,  it is still swimming today.

any thoughts.

That is a nice Bass....I checked my Golden Rule and it doesn't even go that high...
It had to be well over 6lbs maybe pushing 7lbs...

cr

I'm guessing somewhere around 8lbs, going by my Gander Mountain ruler .

motocross269

I agree CR I rechecked a table that I have and it would have to have been close to 8lbs...
That is a Pig...Was it caught in Michigan???

thedude

i've held and netted few 29" bass in the st. johns river in FL that were right around 9lbs.
my guess on a northern strain... 6.5-7.5lb range. Great fish for MI waters for sure!

How fat was it?

That's true...I am 71 inches and the "Golden rule" for humans says I should weigh 165...I may be just a LITTLE over that.... ;D

dartag

it was not real fat like the ones you see from down south.  good color and a huge mouth.

Buckeye

First , I agree with several estimates that it might be in the 7 lb. range.  I also wondered how much girth it had, but if you say it was thin, it is probably an older fish.  I've caught many bass that are long and lean, ones that almost look deformed.  They're head doesn't fit the rest of their body.  I would guess it's an older fish.  If it were a young fish, it would be on the feed for the harsh part of winter right now.

If it was on the normal size, probably a 6 to 6.5.  If it was really fat, probably close to 7.

Ive cought alot of florids strain 8 lb'ers and their usualy at 24", I just measured an 8-1 on my wall and its 23".
Id be pretty certain its well out of the 6lb range and well into 7 if not 8lb range, I sure wish I could find a michigan 24 1/2" bass Id be stoked.

A good friend of mine swears his son and him were trolling for pike on Fenton lake 5yrs ago and caught a 24 inch bass . I heard the story from both of them and I believe their telling the truth . They were not having any luck so his son put a large deep diving Muskie type bait on and were troling a drop-off that went from 12 fow down to 30 fow. They released it also, no pics, but I believe em .

My personal best LM in MI is a 6-12 which measured 23.5 in. I did not get a measurment on the girth but it was a thick largemouth. I would think a 24.5 in would be between 7 and 8 pounds depending on how fat it was.

I took a photo from the 6lb 15 oz fish I caught earlier this year and did some estimates on the length.  The top of my index finger to the bottom of my pinky finger is ~4 inches (slightly over, but we're not being too scientific here).  The top and bottom line on the image is the tip of the mouth (when open since I am holding it) to the tip of the tail (which is flared, not pinched like it would be when measuring for a tournament).  This fish was definitely over 24 inches and was 6 lbs 15 oz on a Rapala scale, which typically weighs a little on the light side.  I say it weighed 6 lbs 15 oz because that is what the scale said, but realistically it was a 7 lb + fish.  This fish was fat.  If your friend's fish was thinner, I would say it was a minimum 6.5 - 6.75 fish conservatively.

got my best Mi largemouth in October of 04, and was exactly 24.5" long, The fish was pretty fat for October and went 7.6 lbs. So I would have to agree and say that your buddies fish was in the 7 pound range, +/- a pound, depending on what shape the fish in.

BigSmallie

I've had 2 Largemouth that were 23.5" and 23" respectfully.....both weighed 7.3 & 7.00.......the 23.5 was weighed on a digital meat scale.

I caught an 8lb.7oz. largemouth in Ohio a couple of years ago.I received a Fish Ohio award for the length, not the weight.I'm looking at the photo of it right now,it was a very fat fish, and it only was 22" long,it looked like a football-lol! If the fish in question was pretty hefty,I would guesstimate it at around 9lbs.,or a tad better.Like Buckeye said, without the girth it's hard to guess.

Got Fish??

Next time mesure the length and the gerth of the fish. I have a formula for the weight. It's realy close. E-MAIL me and I will give you the formula
