This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Square steel rod with a bait caster with no level wind, dacron line and no free spool kept me from trying to adopt the 'new' casting reels from the old spinning and spincast for awhile - though I really like my Zebco Cardinal spinning reels when I upgraded to them.

I also remember when I bought a Shakespeare President casting reel I thought I was pretty cool stuff! I still have one in one of my 'old stuff' piles ('sentimental' pile)... don't believe it is one of my originals though. A newer one though it still looks ancient compared to the space age stuff we get now.

Ranger 361V was my first dream rig too! Got my fishing partner at the time to buy one! Got another of my best friends to buy one a little later too! :) We had one of the first Loran units on that first 361 so we were popular to follow... except for those times I've mentioned before when we'd get out in the middle of St. Clair and it would lose the signal... usually in heavy fog... so yes, compasses and other navigation device backups like charts, are a must!

We did cane poles. We did the spring sucker runs (not a big fan of canned suckers but I ate them...) - I was competitive even then always trying to be the kid who caught the most! We did Jitterbugs at midnight Saturday of Memorial weekend on Lobdell Lake - "it's time! Start casting!" Creme worms. Three-hook worms sometimes. Manns Jelly Worms. Crazy Crawlers and the Hula Popper sometimes.

I practiced for a tournament in a Ricky Green machine (a Cajun)! Ohio River... first time catching spotted bass.

Sure am glad coveralls with patches went out of style. Well, most places for most people anyway... ;D

Hey! You older guys! What DOES woolly mammoth taste like?!? Bob Brunner won't tell me!! (;D)

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
