Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

Hey guys whats goin on lately anyone have the crazy itch to get on the water like me? I hate winter... So I was just wondering lately, I know you guys all fish alot on St. Clair and Erie and Im sure alot of you dropshot out there. Do any of you have any sucess with largemouths on a dropshot? To me it seems as though the drop is a great numbers rig if you need to get a limit easily, its a great rig for that. I really havent had any sucess on big fish with it have you?I think the biggest largemouth Ive ever caught on one is 2 1/2.A jig or crank always seems to produce the kicker not the dropshot maybe im doing something wrong huh? >:( Until next time-skeeterman-

LGMOUTH

Skeeterman,

I've had pretty good success with the dropshot for largemouths. I've found that when the largemouths move deep it is a fantastic way of catching some real good ones. Yes it does catch allot of smaller fish, but it will catch those finicky big ones on the deeper structure. The dropshot does work well shallower but I have found that the Jig or Jerkbait seems to find the biggerones up there.
When you are in any contest you should work as if there whereto the very last minute a chance to loose it.

If you are interested in a great DVD set on drop shotting check out this website

For twenty bucks you won't find a better instructional video. Excellant and the best I've come across on drop shotting.

You can catch good LM with the rig. The following link is to an article that deals mostly with how to fish the rig, but should also give you some good insight.

Im originaly from sandiego and in the winter the LM bass move out deep onto points and structure anywhere from 25 to 60 ft deep and the only real way to get them is drop shot or jigging spoons and the big bass do bite drop shot very well I have weighed several limits over 30lbs on dropshot, my favorite dropshot bait out there was a 4" light brown worm.
I havent tried to target LM bass in michigan with drop shot but Im sure its the same here.

I'm a little behind the curve because of the technical legality issue of the pass, but I'm catching up fairly quick. I've caught some solid largemouths on inland lakes on dropshot rigs up to 3 or 3 1/2 so far.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

I use it pretty regular on a private lake I fish. There are no Smallies in it and the bigger LM like to hang out in the deepest part of the lake. Usually can find them in 20 to 25 fow. Just off my limited experience in that situation I have had several nice days catching 3 1/2 pounders. Not giants but also not limit fish. Most of the time its like LGMOUTH said and a jig is the ticket for the pigs!

As far as the itch to get on the water goes. Itch is not the word to describe it. More like a clawing need to get on the water.

Drop shotting for largemouth on inland lakes made my boat payments this year. On certain days when I couldnt get nothing else going I would find a shallow weed flat and tie on a 1/16 ounce weight and a finnesse worm and tear it up. I did manage 2 tournament wins on inland lakes with the DS. I did not catch any real big fish, but I was not fishing in typicall big fish areas with the DS.

Hey Lt. Dan,
I have a copy of Seth Burrill's Drop Shotting (2 DVD set) that he sent me to view that I would like to donate to the forum for one of your famous contests. Again I am not affiliated with Mr. Burill, but have corresponded with him letting him know how much I like the DVD and he sent me a copy to give away. For someone like me who hasn't used the technique and wanted to learn this is a must see instructional program. Sooooo, I'll send it to you and you can preview it first then give it away in one of your contests.
