I'm planning on moving to a new server within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Just a little friendly warning as there might be a few hours of odd behavior when the process starts. I will try to have it done at night or weekend.

What speed reel does everyone use for deep diving crankin... Me and gmetime24 have had endless hours of discussions on this subject jw what your guys thought are on this.

I never deep crank with any other ratio then a 5..... I believe slower the better!!

Waterfoul

I have two deep cranking reels/rods.  One is 5.4:1, the other is 5.1:1.   I don't do a ton of deep cranking but if I use a higher ratio I simply tire out from having to crank the dang things in.  Too high a ration can also cause the bait to run "funny" too.

Asking a question like that is like asking a doctor if coffee is bad for you. 10 years ago they said it was killing us, know they say it can add 10 years to your life. 5 years from know, it will be killing us again.

Lightningboy

5:1 for me.

I've tried using a 6:1 and slowing down, but just can't stay smooth.

Tried a 3.5:1 years ago.  You can deep crank with it all day, but it's just not too good for anything else.

Up until 2 days ago when I bought a Revo Winch 5.4:1 all of my reels for crankbaits were 6.4:1.  I'm eager to try it out.  Oh, and I always throw mine on 12# fluoro

You are going to love the Revo Wench :) great for cranking a spinnerbaiting :) Spinner baiting slow rolling that is. I use a 7:1 Revo for the turn and burn spinnerbait or buzz bait. Works great on a Lipless Rattle bait also. The Revo's are on Hey of reel and the new ones are about 20% lighter. What a reel.

Um... Revo WINCH.  A wench is something a pirate captain such as Jack Sparrow might find in Tortuga... LOL!!!!   :D

Picked up a new-to-me Shimano Curado 5:1 from thedude yesterday.  Might even try it out Monday.

the old curado 5.3:1 was a great cranking reel. i got a lews tournament speed spool 5.4:1 and really like it - nearly impossible to backlash. planning on running the 5.4 for DDs and getting a new 6.3:1 lews for shallow divers.  i always use low(er) gear ratio for DDs

Told my wife I was going to check out the new Wench and now I can't go fishing this week!

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Got to try out the revo WENCH yesterday.  Great for slow-rolling spinnerbaits.  Ended up with 3 keepers the biggest was 18".  Just for fun I tied on the 6XD for a couple casts...works like a dream.  I'm sold on 5.4:1!

To me it's not that I can't slow down a high ratio reel when deep crankin, I just find it a extremely tiring way to fish.  Less torq in the higher ratios as far as I'm concerned.  Also not so excited with pairing it with a glass rod.  I know you want to desensitize the bite but prefer using rattle baits and shallower running lures for glass.

Skulley

I like a reel in the 4.4 to 1 ratio.  I use this for throwing big deep divers like DD22's, Mag Warts, Mann's 10 or 20+, and even Norman DLN's.  In the late summer into fall I find myself cranking deep more often.  I usually match this type of reel up with a fiberglass cranking rod such as the American Rodsmith David Fritts edition, or lately the Skeet Reese Cranking Rod.  I also have an older KVD Tour Edition Fiberglass cranking rod that was really great for this ratio.  I never use any high speed reel for cranking.  A 5.3 to 1 is the fastest I use for any cranking.  It is really personal preference and what works for you.
