Went up to my cabin to drain the pipes in advance of this cold weather they say is coming and to do that I have to open a couple of stopcocks in the crawl space. Now, there are usually mice down there so I leave some traps and dcon, but when I went to crawl in I saw some movement and notice something a little larger. I backed out and got the video camera and took some  video. I didn't know if this critter could get out of the pit so I put a piece of board down as a ramp. Up he came. We have a family of mink that have been around the cabin for years and at first I thought this might be one of the kits. However, according to what I researched, it appears to be an adult weasel. After he got out, he hung around a while and I saw him two more times slinking around the cabin while I was working to shut the water off.? Kind of neat. I wish I could get the mink that hunts chipmunks on video. She is a voracious hunter and the kits will play in the yard and have come right up to us and nibbled our shoes.  This bear came in at 8:00  in the evening this past August. Haven't seen him since.

The way I remember it is weasels turn white in winter.

Then their fir is sold as  ermin.
So much water.  So many lures.  So little time.

It looks to me alot like a mink. I trap with my grandpa during the winter months. He has a mink mounted that is white also, did you see and dark spots on him?? He says they turn colors sometimes, but not always.

ermine was the first thing to come to mind when I looked at the picture

As the resident trapper and nuisance control operator for livingston county I will tell you that is not a ferret or a mink it is a weasel also called an ermine as they turn white in the winter months. One thing you do not want to do is kill one of these animals in any kind of an enclosure. As they make a skunk smell pretty. I made the mistake of skining one in the basement and hit the wrong gland. Wife was MMMAAAADDDDD.

Hey! I have a new resource for when I'm trying to figure out what has gotten under my house - I think I have a small nature preserve going on under there right now!

I don't know my mink from my weasel from my ferret that well, but I do know I seem to be seeing more of them this year than ever. All over the place - the river here, Lake Ovid, Mullett Lake, Lake St. Clair, Detroit River. Either there's a boom in the population or the same black pointy-headed sharp-toothed furry critter is following me around.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Bill,
I knew it. The first time I met you I could tell you were a trapper. Dont ask me how I could just tell. I used to trap with my dad when I was young. It must be some inherent phrome that trappers have that other trappers can detect. Have you trapped any thing lately??

Fishon I spend more time now trying to catch bass than anything else still do a little late season mink and muskrat trapping when all the fair weather trappers quit. I like the peace and quiet. Dan any time you have a problem let me know and I will see what I can do. That goes for any one else also.
