On the last trip out my father attempted to lift the trolling motor only to snap the rope and be tossed on the back deck. We will be going over how to replace your rope with a 3/32″ wire cord.

Materials:

4ft of 3/32″ Stainless Steel Cable vinyl coated – $0.36 per foot

Steps

Remove the remaining rope from mounting point
Thread wire through trolling motor, under pulley bar
Tie wire to mounting point
Tie to handle
Test
Really all there is to it!

Even though my Fortrex is nearly new, I've already broken the pull cord.  When I called them they were more than happy to send me a new one at no cost (warrantee).  So I said "how about sending me 2 of them?" and they did so without hesitation.  Now I have a spare!

I like the warranty idea but I bought a 100 ft. spool of clothesline cord that looks just like oem pull cord for 4$ at walmart now I have lots of spares.

I've broken multiple oem style cords, loving the stainless cable though, seems to pull easier (sure its in my head) and it is a heckuva lot stronger.

I need to replace mine again this week.  I planned on using steel cable this time.  The only question I had is did you tie the cable in knots or did you use some type of clamp or what?

I tied mine in knots, I have done it with clamps in the past as well, really it is all up to you. Check out the video on the bottom of the first post, contains a walk-through.

Redbone

With all the plastic MK uses, you wouldn't think the rope would break so often. ::)

Fishmael

I replaced mine last year with parachute cord.  Stuff works awesome and isn't going to break with the weight of a trolling motor!

fowlmouth

Did mine 2 years ago, used crimps at both ends, make sure you grind off the wire ends coming through the crimp on the handle end.

Skulley

Great idea. I think I'll change mine before it breaks.
