Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

Gun Lake Help

So, my buddy and I fished the opener on Gun Lake this past weekend.  Neither one of us know much about the lake and made short work of getting our butts whooped.  What I thought would work paid off in only a small limit.  However, the top teams were putting very nice limits of smallies in the boat.  I didn't even know there were that many nice smallmouth in the lake, let alone that you could target them.  Does anyone have any helpful advice that could help me out there?  I plan on fishing Gun quite a bit this year and would really like to learn the lake.  I don't want to know spots, just how the nicer fish are normally targeted (i.e., tubes, jerkbaits, underwater humps, drops, etc.).

Thanks,
Confused and Concerned.

I've been there a handful of times... I wished I could help you out.
I'm still in your shoes.
I hope that you progress much faster than me.

good luck

i fished that lake a few years back on a weeknight series... about 7 or 8 times. My partner used to live on the lake and was a seasoned tournament vet and pretty darn good bass catcher (many guys on here probably know him). We still struggled to put a limit in the boat most nights... thats gun lake for you. If there are guys who can go out and put together a great sack day in and day out, they probably aren't going to help ya sorry to say.  Wish i could shed more light on the subject all i know is there's some rock piles out there that you might want to try and find :)

Stop in at Matteson Marine and talk to Dale in boat sales. I'm betting he can tell you some things while you look at some nice boats. I don't know if Vaughn fishes out there, but I bet Dale knows...

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
