Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

I was at St. Jean last season when I heard a guy I know (a one time acquaintance) call my name.  When I turned around I saw that he was sitting there with his trailer in pretty bad shape.  His wheel bearings went on one of his axles.  Not good.  "Usually" willing to help a brotha out if I can, I got out my tools and we started trying to tie up his axle so that he could at least limp the boat home.  But as luck would have it, I didn't have the right tool we needed.  I noticed that the Detroit Bass Club was having an outing that day and they were on the other side of the lot finishing up their weigh-in.  I had heard that these were some pretty good (and mostly church-goin') fellas, so I ran over and asked them if they had the tool we needed.

Long story short... they did and offered us whatever we needed.  We got the axle tied up and the guy made it home safely.  I remember thinking how awesome it was that the Detroit Bass Club guys were willing to go out of their way to help out a guy they didn't know who was helping out a guy he barely knew.  They even came by a few at a time asking us if we were ok.

I really believe that it is the mission of all Christ-followers to show true kindness whenever possible.  But too often we don't because we forget that we're supposed to or quite honestly, we get a little lazy or self-centric.  And believe me, I blow it more than I get it right.  But I really believe spreading optimism and hope by doing acts of genuine kindness is a very large part of the mission Jesus calls us to.  So this summer, my goal is to get it right more than I blow it.  I hope I succeed.

Anyway, I just thought someone out there might be encouraged by this nice story.  Way to go Detroit Bass Club!  You guys rock!
