I'm planning on moving to a new server within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Just a little friendly warning as there might be a few hours of odd behavior when the process starts. I will try to have it done at night or weekend.

Looking at going to Big Portage Lake for the C&R opener, was planning going on going to Houghton Lake but weather isn't looking to great up north yet. I have never been there and it looks interesting on my Navionics maps and Google Earth. Anyone know anything about the lake and could share a few starting points? How will the water clarity be this early in the year? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Are you talking the Pinckney one or the Jackson one?

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Water is clear and they will be biting. If you stay on big portage throw a jerkbait and you will get into a nice mix of smallmouth and largemouth.

I usually start on Big Portage. Depends upon the weather and teh size of the boat I'm in. I'm out of practice over there but that has usually been my favorite lake in the chain.

Portage lake update - lake level is now back up from winter drop.  No problem running were ever you want.  Crappie are moving in as water was raised.  By next weekend, should be rocking and rolling ( three weeks behind from previous years ).  Bass are staging at entrances to the canal.  As fishstick said, jerkbait them and the smallies on the sand breaks.

Good luck, and please make sure you give us a report.
