This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Welcome to Michigan and GLB!

I have fished Pigeon Lake (Port Sheldon) once and caught nothing.  I don't know if there is really any fish in there or not.  You can certainly run your Lund just about anywhere in West Michigan and be in good shape.  Most of the western shore of Lake Michigan doesn't hold bass, you have to go way north or south for that action.  The Grand River system is the closest Bass fishing to you.  Fishing is good but there is a stiff learning curve out there.  Mona and Muskegon Lakes are north of GH about 20 to 30 minutes and both have good bass fishing.  Other then those just about any puddle in Michigan will hold bass.  Sorry but I don't know anything about trout fishing.

Again Welcome.

If you have to move from Alaska to another great fishing state, Michigan is the place to be.
You can take off out of Pigeon Lake and troll for Salmon. Straight out of the pier head to 200 ft. of water.
Check out the Outdoorsmen Pro Shop in Jenison. They have a weekly salmon fishing tournament group. Pretty friendly group of guys and Grayson, at the Outdoorsmen, can hook you up with all the tackle and info etc. you need.
When it comes to bass fishing the guys on this site can give you all the info you need. You can also check out my blog at teardropbass.com.
Stream fishing is phenomenal in Michigan. You have some of the best trout streams in the country. Pere-Marquette, Rogue, Muskegon, Big and Little Manistee, the AuSable, etc. (http://www.michigantroutstreams.com/michigantroutstreams/ )
If you need a good guide for trout, one of the best is http://www.riverquestcharters.com/, Tom Kuieck,  another is http://www.fishonstrikezone.com/, Jason Frolenko.

And you moved at just the right time.  Steelhead should really be picking up and will peak mid-april.  However, you can catch them into May.  Most of the rivers in W. MI get at least some kind of run.  However, the Muskegon, Pere Marquette, and Manistee will get a lot of fish.  Start there and then try some of the smaller rivers.  Make sure you check the DNR regs to make sure the stretch of river you want to fish is open this time of year.

We have pretty big salmon runs in the fall too.  Start in Sept and go until November, which is when the steelhead start again...works out pretty well!  ;D
