Title: Do you full spool flouro?
Post by: LipRip on March 02, 2010, 03:16:17 PM
I was listening to the radio show that dan posted in this section and kvd said that he doesnt spool his reels full of flouro. He only spools the last 60yrds. I've never heard of this, does anyone do this?

I do.  I will spool about half the spool with mono and join the lines with a uni to uni and then crank on my Fluoro.  I normally won't do this for my pitching rig because I go through a lot of line on it but I always do this on my cranking and spinner bait rigs because most of the line is untouched all season.  When it starts to get bad I strip it off and replace the Fluoro.

I back my flouro with braid.  Flouro is just too darn expensive to spool the whole reel.  Even on my crankin rod, if you put 60-80 yards of flouro on there i dont feel it affects the action or depth the bait runs at.  Spinning reels i use even less of a flouro leader, only 8 feet or so. I just don't see the need to spend the money to spool an entire reel with flouro.

I do too, I always back it with mono. Way cheaper than spooling on the full spool. If you only put on about 60yds you can get three reels full with one spool of line. This way I can (in my mind) justify buying the best flourocarbon instead of settling for a less quality line.

i use a backer on everything. braid, floro, copol.   mono is cheap as heck and i got plenty laying around. run a backer and leave it all season... maybe two lol. change your mainline as needed.

I filled up my spools with flouro in the past but this year I am going to start using backer. Its just to darn expensive and now I can't even get seaguar invisx for the $15 a spool I was paying at D&R the last couple years. Of course they had to jack the price up this year to $18 like everyone else.

hmm, seems like a popular tactic! so, what kind of knot do u use to join them?

I think most people use the Uni knot. Some people use the blood knot too. The Uni is pretty easy to tie and strong.

Backing with braid can lead to big problems if your line gets soaked. Wet braid will spin on the reel. I had that happen in a downpour and had a heck of a time landing a nice bass.

What if you pull the braid through two of the holes (on wiffle spools) and tie it off that way? I dont see how it could slip if you did this.

NOW YOU GUYS TELL ME! LOL Now that I already have all my reels respooled. I would have never thought of this. Well, theres always next year lol. You guys are so much smarter than me.

I use a scientific method.  I use old flouro as a backer.  I take the new line clip it to my truck and walk the length of my lot 190 feet or 63 yards.   Tie the line at the truck to the backer with a double uni.  as i reel the line on i crimp it between my fingers.   It seems to get most of the loops out,  and keep my wife entertained.

another tip is as the line starts getting spool loops.  cut off your lure and let it out behind the boat as you idle along.   it will take out a lot of the loops and extend the life a little.

Or just put on 8lb Fireline and use a Flouro leader.  That Fireline lasts all year.

That is an idea. But if I'm going to back up an expensive line, I'm going to go with the least costly alternative. Most likley mono.

I started last year backing my floro and braid with cheap mono...I use the uni to uni.  I also flip my braid either once a season or at the end of the season depending home much I use that rod.  I'm getting 4 spools of braid out of 150 yard spool of power pro...can't beat that.

I agree if I am going to start using backer it will be some cheap mono. Regardless of what I use I always weed my line through two holes on the wiffle spool and tie on that way. If someone was going to tie braid as backer or full I would think this method would take care of the slipage problem. If you don't have a wiffle spool I would think if you tied the braid on tight and left a longer tag end out and bent it across the length of the spool and used electrical tape it would work too.

I always use some backing, sometimes two or three types as I found when cleaning reels the last weekend. It's always mono at the bottom, during the spring classic at BPS they sell big spools of Big Game for cheap. I use it on a couple reels then have plenty left.

It's funny that this came up today because I was in bed last night thinking about the best way to do this. I'm probably buying more Sunline this year in 100yd. spools which is plenty per reel, but I need to know how much backing to put on so that the reel is full when I'm done. If I had all the same reels it would be easy, but I don't. I have a clip on Rapala line counter so maybe I can try to figure out how much of each to use with that.

Also I always use a uni to uni knot and haven't had any problems.

Always mono backer.  Always uni to uni knot.

I got a bunch of freebie spools of trilene a couple years back... works great as backer because I'd never use it as a mainline!

u guys are missing out if u never use mono as ur main line! ???

I use braid as my backing because it doesn't get memory like mono, so I don't have to change my backing for many years.   It has really saved $$ for me.

I do use mono for my main line when using topwater and sometimes with spinnerbaits (although I must admit I don't throw these often).  However, there really isn't many advantages to mono over flouro for me other than it floats.

The only problem with braid as a backing is it can slip if not tied well. I had a very bad day with this one year. Lost some big fish, couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting a hook in them and then saw the braid was slipping on the spool.

If you use a arbor knot on the spool it won't slip!

Worked at Al & Bob's 20 yrs ago. Filled thousands of reels with line. We had string (kinda like kite string I guess) we always offered to use as backer. I've used a backer on my reels ever since, even before the fancy/pricey lines came out. But that's just the Hollander in me showing thru!

If you just tie on 10 Ft of mono then tie on your braid it won't spin. Found out the hard way with walleye on the Sag river one spring.

I always use backing, always mono. It's cheap. I've never had a problem.

I use mono fill on all of my reels.  1/2 mono, 1/2 Fireline.  then when my fireline gets old i fill 1/2 of another reel with mono, then reel the fireline from the first pole onto the second.  that way the old line is in the middle of the reel and fresh fireline is on the outside.  I only use 4 feet of flouro and have found that a uni to uni won't work because Fireline slices through the flouro.  I use a very small ball bearing swivel to join them together.  I don't like casting just flouro because on spinning equip it seems to spool off on its own.

The proper installation for braid is to put on mono first then attach the braid. I've had quite a few guys bring me their reels saying that the drag can't be locked down. The first question - did one use mono for backing? The answer is always no, I didn't know I needed too. The spools are so slick braid just won't grip. Besides braid isn't cheep either. I don't know many people the fish the bottom half of the spool, so I just change the top half.

If you are using braid as your main line and have had issues with slippage,A simple trick I have used with success.Just put a couple of wraps of electrical tape on the spool before spooling ,Has worked well for me.

This is exactly the lesson I learned. Buy some cheap mono - then attach braid. My wife gets a kick watch the spooling process of mono, then braid, then floro leader. Crazy but cost effective and a great setup.

I buy bargain bin bulk mono 10 or 12 lbs test for my backing for any bass fishing. Fill all my spools about half way with that and just leave it on for the good mono, fluoro or Spectrex. Saves a bunch of money on line. I use different knots depending on how big the main line attaching is.

I too use mono backing for all me reels.  I like to use Cajun Red as it's cheap plus it's easy to see when I'm getting low on my clear mainline.

Watching Jimmy H. on tv today.  Saying he uses a Blood knot to tie on his backer.  Looked like a pretty good not. I might give this one a shot.

Ditto.  I use the cheapest mono I can find and spool a half reel of it, then the rest with floro.  On reels with braid, I spool half reel with mono, the other half with braid, and use the Floro leader.  Saves lots of $$.  Uni-Uni seems easiest and I've never had one fail.
