I returned last friday from 3 days on Chequamegon Bay (Lake Superior) in Ashland, WI. with fishing partner, Dr. David Lambrix. It was a mix of post spawn and some late spawn activity. This is one of the top Smallmouth Fisheries in the USA and it showed its colors this trip with an incredible average size of almost 19" for about 80 bass netted. This includes some of the bass shown that are over 20". As soon as I get Dave's camera pics I will resend the biggest brutes over 5 lbs...

Basic best techniques...
Early morning...topwater frenzy until the sun hit the water... Rapala MaxRap Pop and Heddon Baby Torpedo

Later morning until mid day... drifting 3-6 fow flats that had wood, rock, or gravel... best lures per success rating...
(1) Senko worm rigged wacky style (Yamamoto or Trigger X)
(2) Swim jigs...(Terminator or Brovarney) with a Trigger X curly tail grub
(3) Spinner Baits...white or chart white with gold willow blades... I used Terminators and Stanleys

Late afternoon... Rapala DT 4s and 6s... Citrus Green

My new (to me) Lew's Reels and Dobyns Rods performed flawlessly! These big smallies succumbed to 8# new(improved in my opinion) Sufix flouro and 8-10# Siege Mono...

Sounds and looks like a Great day of bass fishing. Nice pictures!

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Nice fish!  I've fished there once and found some big smallies up there.  I'm a big fan of the South Shore Brewery in Ashland as well.
