Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

What type of gear ratios do you prefer for the following baits:?

-Cranks
-Spinnerbaits
-Soft Plastics
-Jerkbaits
-Top Water
-Jigs
-Carolina Rigs

I'm sure more then one bait mentioned may fall under just 1 choice.  Curious to see what you boys think is ideal for these baits?

I am haunted by waters.

I use a high speed reel for every application (6.2:1)..you can always slow your retrieve down, but if you have a slower reel there is no way to speed it up..

More importantly - inches of line recovery per handle turn.  That isn't always proportional to the gear ratio.  But typically I only use slower reels(~21"/turn) for deep crankbaits.  Fast retrieve(~25"/turn) for all others.  I am looking to get a Abu round reel for burning spinnerbaits though - they are also 6.3:1 but the line recovery is 30"/turn like the 7.1:1 curados.

Andy

Cranks,Jerkbait and Top water 5.2:1
All others 6.2:1

I'm with Blake on this one.  I stick with the high speed reel for everything.  (Incedently, so does Greg Hackney, if that means anything)  I figure I can always slow my retrieve which ends up being less revolutions of the handle over the course of a day anyway.  If figure, why use a slower reel, so I have to increase my revolutions per day?  It just creates more work for me an since I'm quite a lazy sluggard I want to avoid work whenever humanly possible.   ;D

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
