The poorly written, damaging to Michigan Sport Fishing commercial fishing bills have been introduced again. State House Bills 5801 and 5802, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin and Rep. Jason Morgan, have been assigned to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.

This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Yesterday was the second paper tournament held on Kent Lake. I headed to the Lake after work on Friday to do some pre-fishing. I didnt do very well, so I didnt really have a plan for Sunday other then to just show up and fish. The two keepers I caught on Friday were caught within the first the 20 minutes on the Lake off the small island in front of the fishing pier, being that was the only place I got a keeper I started there.

As we oozed off to begin the day I noticed a boat from another club heading to the same island, that boat hit the east and south side I hit the west and north side. Worked around it for about 30 minutes without so much as a nibble. once we fished the Island we worked the rock shore along the south end of the lake. My dad picked up a couple of shorts on a pop-r and I got a couple of shorts on a senko. Being there were several other tournaments at the same time there seemed to be a boat or two on ever shore and ever spot I could see that I wanted to head to next. We decide to go try our luck in the lake south of 96, we stop just north of the bridge and fished our way into the lake, thinking maybe more people would stay in the main lake we'd have less pressued water on this side of the e-way, WRONG, there were a ton of boats over here, so we picked the right side and started working our way down it. I picked up several more short fish and had a keeper come unbuttoned at the boat. Motored down closer to the dam and continued down the shoreline. Finally caught my first keeper of the day on a hula grub off of a log along the shore line. It was a whopping 14 inches long, about the same time the wind picked up and the temp dropped, figures I wont get a day of fishing where I didnt have to fight the wind. Fished down around the dam and beach for a while with no success, so we started working our way back towards the bridge on the opposite shore. My dad picked up his first keeper just east of the beach. Shortly after my dads I hooked into a nice fish that hink tink when I set the hook, I know it was a good fish because it came leaping out of the water with my hula grub stuck in it's lip. So now its 11:30 I only have 1 fish and two that got away, its cold and windy and I want to just go home, but I keep at it, we finished fishing the entire shore from the beach to the bridge. Where to go now? I decided to head to the large island infront of the launch in hopes of getting out of the wind, well big suprise there were already two boats working the calm side, so I went around to the wind blown side. Its now 12:00 and there is only an hour and thirty minutes remaining, I figured I wasnt going to pull together a limit so I decided to try my luck with a shakey head worm, I put all my other rods away leaving only the shakey head. I was going to just fish that until the end. BEST DESICION of the day, within an hour I had my limit! All were in the 14-15.5 inch range but it was a limit! After I caught my last fish we passed a boat that wastched me catch it, they wanted to know what I was using, becasue prior to us fishing it, that shore was beat by like 5 boats and none pulled one off it. I either got lucky or the shakey head is just that good. I will from now on have one rigged up all the time.

I think the winning length was aroun 87.5 inches, I had I think 72 3/4 inches, I think I was in the 6th to 7th place range. The winner said he got the majority of his fish on some 20 dollar king shad swimbait.

Congrats to the winner, I cant remember his name right now. I think there were a total of 14 people fishing.
