anyone want to do a frog only get together, ie frogs with plastic/rubber legs only? sometime in the summer
Veronica and I would be game.
I thought we were going to have frog legs and beer?? ??? :P ;D
BD ;D
That would be fun. I expect to check out the new Bass Frog Clones (http://www.bassfrogclones.com) to see how they catch 'em.
Sure does look like the fun I remember:

Seriously, it sounds like fun. I would be game. I like frog fishing. Does it have to be a frog?? Sometimes the little mouse or rat does pretty good. Same style except no legs. How about a frog/rat only??

Is that a Frat then? ???
I believe it's a rog.
ok now that we got a few interested people we just need a date and a lake with lots of slop to fish
how about Froggers vs Jig fishermen vs Crankbaiters. although the slop will get the crankbaits dirty
Sounds like fun. Belleville can be real good for froggin and has plenty of slop. Lake ovid in lansing is another good frog lake. Mojo and i seen some bigguns @ the dk open a few years back.
I'm game and Lake Ovid does have alot of slop! Let me know the dates!
There were some good ones caught on frogs at the first DK Open on Lake Ovid. Ovid is a lake that has alot of slop and alot of good size bass to be caught in the slop. I fished it only 3 or 4 times last year but caught my fair share, including a few bigguns.
A frog/rat day would be fun, I would be there if I could.

sounds good. only problem with that lake is there is a tourny almost every weekend. I know I have quite a few there. Also after 11:00 it is a zoo on nice days. But hey everyone loves a party.
Ever been to Wolvarine. No wake until 11:00 am every day. Love that lake.
Ovid is a fun lake to frog-fish. I'd be game.
Ovid, might have to do. i've never been there b/c "no wake" but from the looks of it it might be a good location. is the campground on the east side of the lake a state campground or is it a private?
Sleepy Hollow State Park. The no wake thing on that lake isn't too bad because it's not that huge of a body of water.
Only 400 acres but a large percentage of the lake is fishable - lowland reservoir only about 30 years old. Several island and small bays. Nice little state park campground. Only a few yahoos running on plane each year so no jet skis or crazy people. Pretty much just a fishing lake. One of my favorites.

ok then, Ovin it is and i guess i'll be saving a bunch of gas money too. Now we need a date and we will also need to decide if this a tournment or just fishing for bragging rights. if its a tourny let's keep on the cheap side like $20 a boat and $5 for big fish, sugestions welcome
Bragging rights are always fun...

im pretty easy. the only thing i am really concerned with this season is the Lake Drive North tournaments. I should be able to work around anything else.

I'm still trying to get my boat finished. Hard by myself. IF I ever get it done, and can fish out of it, then I'll try to fit this in. It sounds like fun.

well throw some open dates up and we will see who else can make thouse dates. i'm wide open for june but the last week in july i'm booked, i guess we could bump into Aug. if we need to
It's been my experience on Ovid that the frog bite is better in July than June, and maybe even slightly better in early August. Has anybody else found this to be true? Or is it just my timing?
Although Ovid is not that big, a large percentage of it is what I call "Frog Water".
It would be fun anytime. I will absolutely try to make it.
Willie
To hit it best for frogs over the long haul, you need the weeds to top out well meaning usually past June, but not to where they have really died off, meaning mid to late August most years lately, which probably means July into early August just as you predicted.
I've had some good quality topwater days later, but the lake can start fishing a lot smaller and less numbers for frog and topwater on many days because the cover has fallen back quite a bit.
There's actually a short window in June sometimes that can be awesome - transition of post-spawn into pre-summer - but it would be very hard to hit (and maybe not really happen) and June is a really busy month.
Holy guacamolie !! Froggin !!! Can I get on someones back deck for this event ??? !!! ;D ;D ;D plweeaaase !!!?? Who needs a budrow ?

OK give us a date MOJO and I are ready. This is a team event right.

I could ask my contact about Capt Ken. You never know about these things - he might show up and bring some of his top of the line topwater frogs.
I'd prefer flying solo, I have a bad habit of hitting people in the back of the boat with small fish while froggin'.
can hoosiers and yoopers fish this too?

frogapalooza, i love it
So is it going to be the 13th and 14th or just one or the other.
I think it should be a team event but you can fish alone too. I think there should be a money pot for big bass. Maybe $20 per boat for the 1st and 2nd biggest bass and a 60-40 split respectively.

i'm thinking saturday for the frog thing, as far as any money or bragging rights, so far it's one vote for each. we have plenty of time to figure that part out.

Sunday is open for me .... Im requesting we box the rules such that we are clearly a slop fishing event (Rats should be included ... ?) Maybe say it must be a 4/0 hook (that'll exclude crankbaits) or bigger and bait cannot sink (that'll exclude swim baits??) No sub surface caught fish allowed etc ? Those types of examples ???
Your thoughts folks ?

frog = rubber/skirt type legs and look like a frog. sorry no frog patterned buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, spooks, popper type baits (unless they got frog type legs) or crankbaits no matter how shallow they dive.

Get on I-69 to Lansing (pass my house - honk) to N US-127 on the North side of Lansing.
Go about 8 miles North on US-127 to exit at Price Rd - Sleepy Hollow State Park.
Go East (turn right) on Price Rd about 5.5 miles to main entrance or just past the 4-way stop at Shepardsville Rd on the left is a quick turn into the boat ramp (if you cross the bridge you missed it).
If you want to go to the campground instead keep going about a 1/2 mile past Shepardsville Rd on Price Rd to the main entrance on the left. Follow that to the campground sign.
Pretty easy and no skiers or jet skis. Just panfish anglers and some waterfowl. Oh, watch out for deer. Lots of deer.
Thedude and I will plan to bring a scale and stuff too.
With Genie's new additions I don't think he will be able to leave the house except for diapers and formula for at least a year....maybe two!

I will hard to go from a day on Ovid to a day on Muskegon and be worth a crap. I think we have to pass and focus out attention on catching a good sack on Muskegon. Sorry.

GLB event, hmmmm i guess so. i just posted the idea and it grew from there, i haven't talked to Dan about this being an "offical GLB" event, but becoming a member of GLB is pretty easy and free i might add.

This is a bob o production and not limited to GLBass members but I don't know why someone wouldn't want to join in on all the other fun we have? They don't have to be a member if they just don't want to and they can still fish. I wouldn't want to keep anyone from a fun froggin' day anywhere! But I still hope they join. We're getting close to the 2,000 member mark! We'll be closer later this week when I put in some additional sign ups.

how about $10 a head 1 fish limit, biggest bass wins it all.

what's scoop on ovid? no-wake, electric only, speed limit? never been on before.
and when is sign-up? i see alot of comments.
as for entry fee, i say $10/per head, $5/big bass pot. winner take-all, most weight. just my thought.
I think the plan is to sign up at the ramp at the lake. It is a gas motor, no wake lake. Only fishing goes on there pretty much in the summer. 400 acres. Mostly shallow and weedy. 30 year old lowland reservoir. Flooded the Little Maple River and some ditches. A few old farm foundations and ponds.
Ol Stacken em and I are conjuring up our stradgedy ! This is going to be fun !!
Did we figure on the braggin rights $$$ ? What if we went $15 a head and $10 a boat for big bass ? (Works out to $20 a person for those allergic to algebra).

just checkin' in latest posts. the above $20/person is a reasonable & friendly fee for all..
going to make a drive soon to visit ovid.
$20 is almost a normal fee except its 100% payback instead of 62% payback like NBAhey :o :o. Anyway, the payout n fees arent important. IF we only do $10 or $20 a head Im sure everyone will still have a great time. I am going to bring some tackle packs and lures for prizes too ,,,,,,,
Maybe thats our entry fee ?? Everyone bring $10 PLUS Everyone bring $10 worth of some extra lures from home ... something cool........... We split the pot between 1) The heaviest 5 bass and 2) Big Bass. Next - the winner gets first pick at the table.... all the way down the line ??? ;D That way everyone gets a prize for coming out ?? That would be fun. Anyone second ?
I was out on Ovid this morning. There is at least one Bass in the lake!! Couldn't get a Frog bite though :(

bob o with Ross
The Money, it goes like this. $15 per fisherman, and $5 for big bass, I've recruited Mojo as the "Money Man" he will collect before the no wake blast off ::)
and please post your boater/non boater status so no one gets left at the dock.
Veronica and I are in, as long as the boat is fixed by then.

whats up with the boat? it is a no wake lake so the trolling motor is all you will need, and a couple good battries too
we're in:
myself (dave) & leo
Count us in, VinceR and Jay-MadWags will be there.
As far as I remember, Mikesmiph is with me. I have a big boat so Veronica will fit in there too. As long as she doesn't throw any frogs at me!
cameraguy says he's going to come fish so he'll need a boat to jump in.

hoping to get a sneek preview next tuesday. ;D
so we got to the infamous ovid lk. as mentioned. after a 35-45min drive stopped for breakfast and back on road @7:15, on water a little after 8. did some map checking & on to first area. at that we boated 3 keepers on frogs in little over an hour. wow, we thought a good thing going. well from that time 'til 1:30 or so boated 3 dinks & a few more swing an a miss attempts but not another keeper in the boat. headed back to launch and then took ride thru campground to view our site.
overall, lake nice looking w/alot of good junk. a good choice for this event. thing i haven't seen yet, is this going to be a 4, 5, 8hr. tourney?
i've attached a pic of our smallest keeper @ 14 1/2"
Im there with Brandon if thats ok. he'd be a member but he's a non computer owning slacker, lol

i've checked & only have seen a possible start time, but have not seen a time for weigh-in.
8 days to go..
we to be at site #82. boat or 2nd vehicle will have to be parked at overflow parking near park office. couldn't get a larger spot. looks like cmp'grnd to be full that weekend.

at the top of page 9 of this post i asked for a head count, hoping people would "quote" me and add there status then keep quoting from there on until a list was generated. anyway page 9 seems to have most of the boaters and non boaters. if you are a non boater please find a boater to fish with this is not a draw event, but i don't want to leave anyone on the dock either.
i will be a campsite 116 with just myself so if you want to pair up for tent space or for parking just stop by.
as far as tourny length safe light until 2:00
Work came up, so nevermind. Figures. Y'all have fun!
singles or doubles? If it's singles we can always squeeze a 3rd in my 15' boat. we wont have all the tackle taking up room. I've narrowed my selection down to.... FROGS.

VinceR - Boater, with Jay-MadWags.
Team format, right bob o?
Team heaviest 5 fish caught on a frog or toad only - This list will stay live until 10 p m Aug 12th.
Here's what we have so far:
Vince R. and Jay Madwags
Laporte and Mojo
Bob O. And Ross
djkimmel And Durand Dan
Bosshawg. And Leo
FBenn. And Brandon
Hooksetter AND Mick
BNL. And BBTT123
Mikesmiph And Girlscanfish2
Capt Charlie And. ????
Ellipsis And ?????
So bring $15. $5 more for big bass and let's try to launch right at daylight (7am latest - Official sunrise is 6:41) and fish til 3 pm ? Does this sound right ? Everyone who is interested not on the list above please chime in so we can finalize the list.
August full moon phase is strongest at 1:59 pm August 13th :o so my prediction for the event : PAINNNNN (for the frogs) I think them fish will punch them frogs like Mr. T in Rocky III ;D ;D Cant wait ;D ;D
Hey I just want to propose (not changing) but asking:
darn bass can be sooo fickle - can we be flexible and allow more surface and slop baits ? Only baits where fish blow the surface ? If not, could we pull some baits at launch for group approval ? Just looking to ensure everyone has max fun while staying in the spirit of the event?
I think we already had that discussion once? I'm not fishing with Mikesmiph now. If he gets the day off, he's bringing his own boat. I thought I might be fishing with cameraguy now, but he may have some work that day.
EVERYONE - Check in on the website. Lets keep Reply #143 LIVE and I'll continue to update pairings. As far as baits - Frog only, but bring your best slop bait to the boat ramp and we can do a Gong Show. Lets have fun with it ..... ;D
As of now I will be there. I will be a boater, my buddy Mick will be fishing with me.
Not trying to fan any flames, but being true to the spirit would be frogs only, as the name of the tournament states?????? ??? ??? Just thinking out loud.
Willie
Mojo, See if you can hook up with another boater I'm not gonna be able to make it. Family things came up.
Looks like Durand Dan and I are going froggin'
Uh, when is the event and what time? Also, does anyone need a back seater?
Who was bringing the weigh in equipment?
are hood ornaments allowed? i might bring a non fishing, bikini wearing decoration for the deck of my boat
Distracting the other contestants is very sneaky ;D
Might have to fish with a 1 lunker handicap!

a quick show of hands at the morning meeting will determine that.

Turn West (left) on Grand River off of M-52.( there is businesses on 3 of the corners there). Go to Laingsburg, about 8 to 10 miles and then after you pass through town turn south (right) on Meridian Rd. Go about 3 miles and turn West (left) on Price road. Head down Price past the main State park entrance and the launch site will be on the right. If you hit the stop sign by the church you went about 300 yards too far.

My my, we will be on campsites .... maybe if everyone chimed in and brought 1 item, we could do a pot luck !! I know DK has picnic table clothes, plastic and cups from the last DK open lol !! If everyone brings something, I can bring a portable grill and a tripod to warm up dishes over a fire ?
As of 15 minutes ago there are still 2 sites available, one for Friday, site 105, and one for Friday and Saturday, site 165. Of course that is if the site is updated whenever a reservation is made.

I'm not staying til Sunday but if someone from my area thinks they can safely transport my grill up, its a big a** stainless propane grill. I would take it myself but i drive like an idiot to begin with. Also, put me down for ketchup, mustard, relish.

i have weigh scales, basket & weigh sack. no weight bags, bring em' if you own 'em..

I'll see where I put the leftover tableware and how much is left.
Actually I won't be able to make it now, but wanted to wish best of luck to all competitors. Hope to see some good pics and can't wait to see how the standings turned out.
At the site now. We have drinks and ice and cups covered. Just need some side dishes veggie fruit stuff. Got hamburger and hot dogs. And broasted potatos from frank.
Need a table too ?
I'm very sorry ladies and gentlemen but I'm not going to be able to make it. Very sorry about the last minute notice.

I'm up too. Just got off work. Going to get ready
I hope you all figured out a way to get in some fun today! Feel real bad I couldn't make it. Been under the weather for a day and a half. Feeling better now. I was thinking about all of you as the storms rolled through. I tried to wish them further South. Don't know if it worked at all?
It rained so hard our fish got wet....
Bob O,
Great idea, great time, and great tournament. I think we all had a blast. We're in for next year.
We learned something about frog fishing today. I've always been able to miss fish on a frog and nail them with a worm, never a problem. It turns out that a good follow up bait to a frog is not another frog, lol. I've never been forced to make that decision before. Very interesting fishing.
For those of you with little boats like me,
You only need frogs, hooks, and poles. There is actually room to walk in my boat. It also weighed about a hundred pounds less than normal.
Who burnt the potatoes??? LOL
Frank
so how was the fishing. any big ones. after spending 8 hours on lake orion I think I should have went frog fishing with you guys.
The day was pretty tough for Bob-o and I. Could only get a few bites and all four we caught were 13.5in, but on the last cast Bob-o landed a 5lb brute!! I'm sure the pic will be up sometime later. It took 11 and change to win it... weights would've been higher if it didn't storm for 4 hours
A 5-pounder from any small inland lake is a great trophy. Catching it on a frog makes it that much more awesome! 11 pounds is not bad considering it was frogs only and you had all that weather. Not the best weather for frog fishing. I hope you all had some fun. I was really looking forward to this day and hope it happens again next year.
Well Im just in from Vacation ..... Who won the big frog tourney, Results ?????
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h16/bko3/100_4531.jpg) the fish 5.4lbs
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h16/bko3/100_4533.jpg) the trophy and the cash and the bait i caught it on
oh, and the bottle of Ezra was Mad Wags that Mojo brought along for a toast, that bottle will be at the next Frog thing next year too.
we could have done without the rain but a bit of rain is better that 95 degree heat IMO. after the weigh in we gathered at the campsite and ate hotdogs, polish brats, burgers, poatoes (they were great) pasta salad, brownies (no not the little girl kind) and had a great time.
when i first started post i had no idea that it would turn into a tourny of any kind i just wanted to fish with my friends do some froging. as it turned out that's just what happened ;D and i got big fish to boot.
i'm sure more fish would have been caught if we were tossing spinnerbaits, cranks, tubes etc, but the just frog thing worked pretty good.
i learned a few things about fishing frogs too, which is always a good thing.
see ya all next year, same date, same lake, same time 7ish til 2:30 no changes, just frogs.
If you're only going to catch one keeper on a frog, that's the one to catch!
Veronica and I had a blast for a while. We brought rain gear, if anyone has facebook, I posted a picture of my little trooper in the downpour. When the lightening got too close we headed to shore. I treat lightening on the water the same as I do on the golf course. I respect it. We waited for it to stop, talking to several of the smart ones. The rain started to let up a bit, but there was more lightening to the west. Neither of us wanted to leave, I just wont take those kinds of chances with her on board. By the time we got to Owosso, it almost looked like it was going to clear up. We talked about going back, but decided against it. We will certainly be back next year. Congrats to the winners and to Bob on that beauty. It was a great idea.
Mike - I don't fish with lightning anywhere around either. Especially with precious cargo aboard. Good call.
So who actually won with total weight? Need to know who all the top competition for next year is!
Hey Dan, Mojo has all the information. He was the one who collected all the $. Vince and I finished in second place. We managed to catch a limit even with the hour and a half wait that we took at the ramp while the storms and lightning passed through. I still can't believe teams stayed out on the lake and fished with the lightning. I rerally had a great time. Can't wait for next year!
thanks bob-o & mojo for puttin' on "el froggy" tournament. we enjoyed this.. missed alot on top for sure & our measely 2 couldn't even beat bob-o's big un'. but a blast.
thanks for the food & drinks afterwards. the wive's even had a good time & enjoyed your company. hope to be back for it next year.
dave
We had 6.5 boats for the tournament (Thought it was unfair to collect $40 from Mike S whose lil buddy doesnt even have a tax id yet lol ), We gathered at 6:45 for a team meeting. Showed good examples of exactly what constitutes a frog, and what does not.. That was funny . We had a Frog Mascot in costume, and have the makings of the Froggin 2011 Big Bass traveler trophy. Launch was at 7 am, and the blow ups commenced at 7:05.
Overcast skies came in around 8:30 and it got dark around 9. This really pushed the fish down it seemed, and the rain came like an over head faucet. While Bill and I took refuge on the island, most found the launch, and a few found pockets of coves. Lightning removed all illusion that this was fun fishing. We stepped into survival mode. When the storm passed, lightning still struck until 12 noon, with a cold front of 15 mph winds that really put the conditions in our favor for froggin .. not. This pushed all the slop and exposed only weed tops. Finally the wind cleared and the sun pipped up right as we all were coming to the launch. At 2:25, we thought the park had begun a bull riding session, cause we all heard someone whoopin and yelling and yeehawwing ........ or did someone just win on a Last Cast deal ? !!
Results:
Frank and Brandon 5 fish: 11.16 with a 4.11 lb kicker.
Jay and Vince 5 fish: 10.24
Bob aka bull rider 1 fish: 5.04 lb !!!
Our collecting winners : Frank and Brandon 1st, Jay and Vince 2nd
Bass winners : Bob O 1st and Brandon 2nd
I want to thank those who braved the weather, regardless of the doppler radar reading, regardless of how snuggly their beds were in Lansing ( ::) ) , those who brought in food or any side dish, and thank Bob O for letting us use his campsite for the picnic !!!! Next year, we look to shorten to 6 hrs aand hold off on pre-fishing cause this was a fun event, and we want to keep the spirit of the event alive..... plus have more time for stories and grub !!

That sounds good. Glad no one was struck by lightning. Any pictures of the 'mascot.'
My vote for next year: Keep it the same
Keep this in mind, if you make it start later I will fall asleep and not make it. If I'm already there, I want to fish as long as I can. If some don't like 8 hours and therefore it must be shortened, lets have a $5 or $10 mini afterwords. Maybe same lake with any lure.
But...
I liked it just the way it was. it was a blast. If I get more free time next year I'll stay the night too.

Of all times... I will be there next year for sure one way or the other!

Well you have a whole year to change your mind.

He probably wrote it from his I Pad under the covers while sipping hot cocoa during the storm ...
No hot cocoa but I was asleep. Sort of. No iPad either. Farthest I've gone is an iPod.
Brandon stopped at some little tackle shop and bought ribbit frogs just for this tourney, we had never used them before. thats also what we caught all of ours on. but in white
