Title: Detroit river out of Eleizabeth Park
Post by: peters_skeeter on October 27, 2010, 09:21:16 AM
Heading out with my 85 year old grandpa to try and get him on a smallmouth this weekend. He would love nothing more than to land a few smallies. Just wondering if anyone might know what depth to try? Or if their on points or flats? I hope you guys can help me out, cause my grandpa can only get out a few times a year.  :(
Thank you!

Before the winds came in, the shallow rattle trap bite was good along the north shore. With the high winds yesterday, today and tomorrow it will probably be a big mud hole in the river this weekend. That usually means tough smallmouth fishing.

Problem is, I don't have a Canadian license. :'( I'm defiantly getting one next year. That means i'll have ohio, indiana, michigan, kentucky, and ontario. $$$$$$$ :o

A Canadian license is a must when fishing Erie and St. Clair due to the seasonal movements of the bass. It will be the best money you will spend for the whole year. If you don't get one, you are missing out on a whole lot of good fishing. I wouldn't ever not buy one.

I haven't purchased a Canadian license for two years now and have done very well without it. :-*
Plenty of big fish on the U.S. side. Heck alot of the Canadian anglers come over here to fish claiming we have better areas holding smallies. Speaking strictly of St. Clair obviously.
As for this weekend, don't waiste your time. The water is like chocolate milk. Sorry. :(

Try out in front of the red and white stacks. In the warmwater discharge currant on the river.

That warm water discharge is one of many community spots in the river on the U.S. Side. You can fish that all the way to the back. At the mouth fish north up the breakwall. Worms, tubes, and cranks are the tools. Lots of snags but lots of fish. You may catch a bonus largemouth there too. From the opening south you have rock rip rap and current eddies. Big smallies hang there and cranks are the ticket. You may see me out there Saturday if it is too rough to go to the hot pond.  I will also venture into Crystal Bay and Hidden Lake for big largemouths. But a canadian license is necessary for that part of the river.  I am planning on fishing the hot pond with CSFISHSLAYER on Sunday at the hot pond. It all depends on the wind.  Other Michigan areas to try are the dumping grounds around the big banana as well as river spots like around Grosse Isle as well as Dunbar and Sullivan Island, around Sugar Island and all that area from the Sugar Island north around the top part of the Livingston Channel west. Good luck and we'll see you on the water this weekend.
