Title: Pelee/Colchester trip
Post by: River Walker on September 07, 2009, 02:45:13 AM
Rocknfish and I fished Pelee Island on Saturday, and the stretch of water between Colchester and Oxley Sunday. At Pelee,we started out on Grubb Reef without any success, then moved over to the helipad where I promptly hooked into 2 sheepshead, and lost a big smallie right at the boat, prolly between 4-5lb.That was pretty much it from there. We then surmised that the smallies with the cooler weather at night may be in closer to the shore,so we moved on into the area around Lizard Point. We hit paydirt in pretty shallow water from around 5'-7' deep.We prolly caught around 20 smallies, with the largest a tad over 4lbs.We lost at least that many also, with a couple real brutes. We caught a couple on tubes, but the majority of the action came on drop-shots.Strike zone Slammers in purple halogram, and 3" Senkos watermelon/w black flakes were the hot baits.
Sunday we launched out of Metropark and headed out to Colchester. The algae bloom was really bad, looked like the Yellow Sea,it was so bad that some guy towing his kids around on a jet ski, actually asked us if we knew why the water was that color, and was it toxic-lol! I caught a couple decent smallies right in front of that little marina near Colchester right off the bat on a 100SP Pointer, and found no other takers until we got down around Oxley.I picked off a couple more drifting a tube over the boulders in about 12' of water including one nice-sized one.The algae was very bad in that area,so we moved a little farther east and fished the channel that leads back into Cedar Creek.I caught a couple largies along the wall, one going a bit over 3lbs.We decided at that point to head back towards Metro and fish a couple spots in the river around Celeron Island.Aaron had a huge smallie follow his lure for a few feet and then backed off.It was well over 5lbs.I caught a nice pike, and a couple of rock bass and that was pretty much it for the day.All in all,the fishing wasn't too bad considering the NE winds both days(I never seem to have much luck on Erie with NE winds),we shot some interesting video, took a few awesome photos, and had a ton of laughs as usual-great trip.

I'm making another trip up that way in about a week.I'm either planning on fishing Lake Erie out of Metropark,or make the long drive up to Burt/Mullet.

Thanks for the report. I am from central Indiana and don't get to fish Erie very often or for very long. I was looking for some info but everyone is really tight lipped about the bass. I will be there next Friday for some fun fishing and your report gives me a depth range to start out at. Thanks again.

Most are "tight lipped" because it's still tournament season with the last BFL next wknd.

bmck25,don't know if you meant you would be fishing at Pelee or Colchester. We fished a lot of different depths at Pelee before we found them shallow. We couldn't get anything going in any water over 8' deep there.Like I mentioned, the fish were biting in water between 5'-7' deep. There was three different charter boats fishing smallies in the same area we were, and they were really hammering them.Quite a few times,Aaron was actually catching bass that he could see on bottom, that's pretty remarkable for this time of year,at least on the big lake.

I doubt we run all the way out to Pelee. We will be driving up to Monroe and looking at the wind. We may stay in Breast Bay, go to the river, or Colchester depending on the wind. Thanks for the report. I will post what we find.

I hope you didnt go out, the algae bloom is just breaking up, and the TDS (Total Desolved Solids) makes the algae particulates disapated, but visible, cloudy and fishable. From what we found in practice (22 lb over 10 hrs and my 5 were 18.5 lb - his was 19.5 lb) the 4.5 and 5.5 lb fish are in wolfpacks roaming. Riverwalker or others, PM me if you are planning to come out to Erie, I can tell more once day 2 commences tomorrow so my partner is protected.

We made it up there Friday. Didn't do too well. Only caught 6 smallies close to the river. The fish were decent size though. Three fish were 3lbs with one fish 4lbs. We couldn't find a school and only picked up one fish here and there. The wind was light and the water and weather was great though. We fished water anywhere from 10ft all the way out to 17ft so maybe we weren't in the right water.
