Title: Fishing lead ban introduced in Michigan again
Post by: djkimmel on March 15, 2006, 01:20:08 AM
I'm definitely against a full lead ban in Michigan. I think it is 'feel-good' legislation that doesn't really accomplish a lot other than hit an industry hard during already shaky economic times. The benefits do not come close to the losses in lure-making. I would expect already expensive tungsten prices to soar too if lead is removed as a cheap competitor (think gas prices). Tungsten is not cheap to obtain and common like lead.

Here is a pdf copy (need Adobe Reader (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)) of the legislation introduced this year in the Michigan Legislature - House Bill No. 5575 (http://www.greatlakesbass.com/fishing/2006-HIB-5575.pdf).

I may be discussing this tomorrow with the MDNR fisheries management team depending on time available and other topics.

Expect more on this legislation later.
