I'm in as a non boater,  hubby's in as a boater.  Will we be fishing only american water?  We have never fished it this time of year,  so hopefully he will be fishing with someone that knows where to go.

We have always fished it with other people not in our own boat,  but it looks like so far there are more non boaters.  If it works out that you don't need us to bring our boat let us know Dan.

I will see if the boss will make a donation of some hats or something too.

I'll be there - Boater.

I don't think Canada is open for CIR, so I believe we'll be limited to US waters.

Michigan waters only - updated the information above.

I try to make sure there are as few boats as possible with no one that knows the water. I also like to have a mini-seminar before we launch on where to fish. If someone really needs help - I'll have my boat this year and they can follow me. Fish right by me.

I'll have a better idea about boaters and nonboaters within a couple weeks at most. Last year we ran short, but just tripled up some of the bigger boats so everyone got to fish... and catch some fish!!! That's what this event is all about.

Nonboaters, bring life jackets if you can just to make sure we have enough.

I will put a post up shortly asking for donated items for prizes and promotion to participants. I appreciate any thing anglers might like.

I should be in as a Boater...If the weather hurries up and warms up and I can get everything done on my boat...
Do they have the Golden rules with the "right marks" on them at Gander Mountain or BPS???

Pre-Fishing??? You guys are serious...
Don't worry about the lake getting rough...If it gets too bad you can always shoot down to Metro and kill the largemouth...You won't win the tournament, but it is a blast.
Title: Re: Spring 2008 DK Open Sat May 3rd - Signup Here
Post by: TCook on March 03, 2008, 08:35:55 PM
I dont think its about prefishing to win, its just a reason to fish st clair for an extra day and getting someone who has never been there familure with the lake. I have only been there maybe 8 times in about as many years so I dont think I will be much help. So anyone who can show him around would be nice, I will just be on the back of the boat.

We'll count up boaters and nonboaters by the end of next week to see where we're at.

Count me as a boater also.

I don't know if Anthony can make it now that we aren't piggybacking. I'll talk to him about Golden Rules. I'm sure BPS and/or Gander have them for decent prices. D & R Sports Center probably has them on the west side too.

I don't know why you would want to follow me around Durand Dan.   I am going to follow DK.  Seriously, I am going to the Mile Roads and hanging there all day.  Usually that time of year the Mile Roads are the place to be.  Should be plenty of fish all the way from Anchor Bay all the way to the mouth of the Detroit River.  Should be good all over that shoreline.  I am just excited to be going fishing...........period.

The Mile Roads start about at the 400 Club Apartments - very large beige colored block building just south of the Clinton River cutoff spillway - I think around 14 Mile Rd? Softer bottom there, sometimes better once the mayflies start to hatch.

Then there's Memorial Park a little south. That time of year it might not have the white tent covering - just the metal pole structure out on a rock-lined peninsula. Usually a good and popular area. Mixed rocks, sand and weed.

One of my favorites - the apartments at 12 Mile Rd - long, low dark-colored 2 or 3 story complex - rock patches and runs, scattered boulders with weed, gravel and sand.

Just South is the VFW Hall. Same stuff going on there.

Just South of that is the famous Blue Sea Wall at 11 Mile Rd. Same things there with some ups and downs from dredging and wind/current action around the large point that juts out just South of the marina. Look for the big ole 'white boat house' up on shore just North of the blue sea wall. Lots of really good rock patches, gravel runs and boulders out from that - out to 9 or 10 feet, but most in 7 to 9.

South of the Blue Sea wall a little over a mile starts the most major structure on the west shore of St. Clair - the 9 Mile bar - large markers on the North and South ends (about a mile long) out from what is known as The Nautical Mile from all the marinas packed in their. Near the South end of that bar is the largest landmark on St. Clair - the Nine Mile Tower apartments - looks like a mini Ren Cen.

The 9 Mile to 14 Mile Rd stretch is where the easist and hottest action will be our time of year. You don't have to worry about running up into shallow bays with scattered hazards.

You probably should look at Wayne's Marked Maps - these can make it a can't miss trip every time.

Title: Re: Spring 2008 DK Open Sat May 3rd - Signup Here
Post by: Revtro on April 06, 2008, 11:08:40 AM
Take I-94 to Exit 236.  This is the Metro Parkway (16 Mile) exit.  Head East until you reach the entrance to Metro Beach.  That is Jefferson Ave.  Turn left (North) and take Jefferson approx. 1 mile until it ends at South River Road.  Turn right (East) and take S. River until it dead ends at Harley Ensign DNR ramp.

If you're coming from 696, take until it hits 94 and go left (East) onto 94.  Metro Parkway is about 5 miles up.

Ramp Update for everyone......harley has one dock in water but all others lined up........metro all docks in........crocker dnr launch no docks in yet.......9 mile pier docks lined up but part way in.

Easiest to get off at the Metro Beach Metropolitan Parkway exit east (Exit 236 - also known as 16 Mile Rd) and take that road to the entrance of Metro Beach. Turn left at the last traffic light before you enter Metro Beach Metropark on to Jefferson Ave.

Jefferson ends at South River Rd. Take a right on to South River Rd and follow it to until the road ends at the MDNR Harley Ensign public access site - huge site. Sharp right going into the ramp at the check station so slow down near the last marina.

I'll try to set up near the middle of the lot not too far from the bathroom facility.

Anybody coming thru the Howell area need a rider for gas money?

Bill, I pass Howell on my way to the lake. I come I-96 from M-52. There's plenty of room for you if you're interested.

Okay, I fixed it. I meant to say I-96 (not I-69). That seems to happen more frequently these days.

Hey MIBasser - that's what I like - just jump right in with both feet. I've got you down. Welcome a 'board' ;D

I think I might have 2 Golden Rules with the 1/8 inch catch and release measurements, but I only can remember where 1 is at the moment.

ANYONE with extra CnR Golden Rules, please bring them!!! You're going to want the ones... shoot, no matter how I describe, McCarter or MadWags or someone else will misbehave - so I'll say no more...

I don't think I'll be able to pick up any extras before the event.

Well I am sorry to say anglers, but I am going to have to opt out of the DK Spring Open.  My son has a soccer game that conflicts with the Open and I have to attend his game.  His game is at 1500 and I am sure that is about the time you guys will be weighing fish.  I am going fishing that day but I will have to be off the water no later than 1300 in order to make it back in time.  I never miss my kids activities if I don't have to.  He is only 7 once.  But I wish everyone good luck and a good time.

You west siders should travel 96 not 69.

The DK Open is on May 3rd not May 10th.

Our Dicks Sporting Goods store is generally the same size as everyone elses.

I am a bad boy.
Rev and MacCarter were a bad influence on me and I have learned my lesson about traveling with the wrong crowd. I should have listened to my mother.

You know... there are so many things in this thread now... I just don't know where to start???

I'll try: For the 100th post - I grant 10 free posts. ;D

I will make up weigh slips to use for anyone who wants them - doesn't have to be fancy, but you can get the fancy ones for yourselvles if you want them.

The largemouth bass weighmaster is the right one. If you don't have one, we'll see how what you have measures up, but any other board will have to use the next LOWER mark below the bass' length to be fair and we all know ounces cost in a bigtime championship event like this!!! :o

BD - maybe someone else will have to leave early and they can fish with you?? We shall see - you just won't be able to collect the big prizes by leaving that early, but you can post on here later about how you HAD IT WON!! if only you hadn't had to leave early ;D

And finally - Wags - you are a bad boy... (but I still hope you show up on the 3rd anyway ;D)

Whats the boater to non-boater count? Me and Jav were thinking about coming up thursday night so we could fish St. Clair for two days instead of one since we both have fri-sun off work. We fished a tournament on Maxi last sat and his motor was not running that great so we wanted to figure out if more boaters were needed or if we could both go as non boaters. Also are there any recammendations on cheap places to stay out that way if we head there early and decide to take his boat?

Thanks Tim C

I ordered the weighmaster on Line from Gator grip on 4/11..they charged my credit card shortly after that..As of today I still hadn't recieved it...I called them and they said they haven't shipped it yet..I asked if they were out of them..and she said no they just haven't shipped it yet..Needless to say I wasn't happy..I told her to email me the status of the rule once she got it worked out and I haven't heard anything today...Are they going out of business or what??? Does anyone have another source other than Gator grip direct??? I tried BPS and Cabelas with no luck....Thanks

Well it's official,  we aren't going to be able to make it again this year  :(.

Hubby has to work and it's my bow league banquet that day,  seeing as I won I can't miss it.

Life is getting busy already and we just lost our ice two weeks ago.

I thought for sure we were going to be able to make it this year.

You all have a good time!!

If we have to, we'll put an extra member in a few boats so everyone who wants to fish can.

Wendy - I thought you'd make this one. You're going to miss some great fishing - sorry.

As far as Gator Grips, I hadn't heard anything about their business one way or the other. I'll give my source a call tomorrow to see what's up. I want to make sure I have the 6 extra I'm supposed to have.

Anyone who wants to fish, put up now and I'll see where we seem to be tomorrow night (as long as I don't have to work super late).

Gator Grip hooked me up and sent my scale out 2 day....It took a couple of phone calls and emails to get things rolling...I don't know if they just lost my order or what, but 10 days is an awful long time to process an order and get it sent out...

I thought we were going to make it too.  I'm really bummed about it too.  I have been trying to make one of these for 3 years.  I have to day off too,  but hubby has to work. Hopefully we can do the fall one this year.

I really need to be at that banquet.  When I said I would shoot it I never in a million years expected to win the league.  Now all I have to do is connect with a deer with my bow and I will be extremely happy!

I'm really sorry I'm going to miss this I was so hoping to meet everyone and do some fishing,  actually I was hoping someone could prove me wrong,  because so far I haven't been all that impressed with St. Claire,  don't get me wrong I have caught fish (and the last time it was my fault I didn't get a limit)  however the way everyone talks about it the fish should be just jumpin in the boat! I saw that happen to Josh! (sorta)  Hasn't been that way for me at all.  Maybe it's just because I'm from up North!

Well you all have a good time and I look foward to reading all about it here.

A 40+ fish day on St. Clair will change those perceptions for sure.  ;D  Hope you can get down here soon to experience the amazing spring fishing.  Anytime you and hubby want to come down and try it out, I'd be happy to show you around.  This truly is S.E. Michigans best fishery.

By the way Dan K I am solid as a Boater...I took my boat out on it's maiden LSC Voyage today with Revtro in his boat Babysitting me in case I had any issues...The boat checked out great...All is good..

So much for stability. I will wait until tomorrow night to do a draw. Got 1jav and mojo changed/added.

Well, that helps moto... can you fish the whole day now as a boater? (C'mon, Lake St. Clair we're talking about...)

I was going to hook you up with UAWBD, but won't now. Anyone else wanting to leave early?

Lets hope for better weather.  Lots of time for forecast change and I don't know about you, but have you noticed the long term forecasts seem worse than usual this year??

Ok - forgot to mention I've had a few alternate notices from people so I believe the lists in the boater/nonboater thread are up to date. Ranger_Boats_Team_North and buddy can't make it.

It just dawned on my that MiBassKid is not down here as making it???? Shocking!! I've been saying, 'see you there' every time I talk to him. Guess I just assumed he'd be there, and I don't recall him saying he can't make it??

bigjc, haven't heard back from you yet?

Please everyone, even if the weather isn't perfect, there are places to fish, and a west wind means all of the west shore (Mile Roads) where many of us will fish anyway is still in good shape. If you have to cancel, please notify me ASAP 517-882-8902. I want to make sure everyone gets out fishing that wants to.

No I can't make it this time Dan, baseball games every Saturday this year. I thought I told you at the Lansing Show I wasn't going to come but maybe not...I wish I could come! You really don't know how good St Clair is until you actually fish it. I hope I can get down there at least once this year. By the way...no bass today, one HUGE crappie and a small pike both on a jerkbait. Pike put the hook into my finger almost all the way up to the barb, but that's what you get for not being prepared.

Dan...I plan to take the day off and fish all day...YEEEHAHHH!! I am working today(Sunday) so that should make up for Saturday...
You are right about not worrying about the  weather...Skip said he caught like 100 LM in the Canals on Saturday...There is also the breaks in Anchor Bay and the Bay just south of Harley...I have never fished the bay, but I have heard it is a good spinnerbait area in the early spring..
The extended forecasts haven't been too accurate lately anyway..

The big largies are on fire in the canals right now, it blew 30+ all day saturday and we spanked both species with very little effort, metro canals, macrays canals, basicaly any canal is loaded up with 4 lb largies right now, its about as good as it can get!

Dan - i'm in as a non-boater, but if the list gets too short for boaters, just let me know and i can bring my boat. Maybe i can get paired with someone who knows the area however, as i've never been within 10 miles of lake st. clair, let alone on it.

Dan, I am still in as a non boater. I have been at Norman. That is the reason for the silence on this end.

Ok - thanks for the updates. If no one lets the possible weather scare them away, we are close - I better read all the messages first though... the goal of this event is to make sure everyone catches bass.

I fished st clair again today mostley in the canals for largies, Ive got bass thumb so bad its not funny, I cant fish and count to 100 at the same time but I got close before I lost track, I think we will be able to get everybody on fish.

Are you mostly fishing the Canals at Metro or are there some other ones I should be looking at??? I am just starting to learn the lake...so any help I can get if the weather is bad and we have to run to calmer water would be great..

Sounds good to me. It will be my first trip there with my boat. If the weather is decent I'll check out the lake, if not the canals sound like they will do just fine ;D

Brian all the canals are great right now, I just got home from another trip to st clair and this cold front doesnt seem to be slowing things down much., I need to take a few days off and let my thumb heal up.

You can never have too many days on LAKE ST CLAIR!!! I need boaters at the moment, so I'm hoping you'll fish with us and as I mentioned in the other list thread, I'll take good care of BD somehow...

I am again sorry.  I will not be able to make it as I said in an earlier post.  I don't think it would be fair to the rest of the anglers or anyone else if I cannot be there for the whole thing.  Again I apologize but my kids will always come first.  I am going fishing that day but I want to be on the water by the crack of dawn and off the water by 1230 hours.  I wish I could make it for the duration.  I probably won't be going to St. Clair because I will want to maximize my time.  Although you never know.  Sorry I have to opt out.    :'(  I am actually thinking about going to Brest Bay in Erie that day.  I am curious to see if the smallies have moved up in there yet.  Brest Bay in May and June can yield some excellent quality.  I have always said that if you want to catch numbers, go to St. Clair.  If you want steady 3 to 5 pounders, go to Erie.

Thanks for thinking of me DK.  You owe me nothing.  I am just happy to be apart of the best forum on the web.  I am honored that you think that highly of me.  Again good luck to all the anglers that will be attending.  I sure wish I could make it.  God Bless you all.

BD                  ;D

Oh yeah...........I already got this thing won, I just won't be able to make it.  How's that for confidence DK!!!    :o     ::)     ;)

Um? Who is Chuck? I don't have a Chuck on the list? Wait - are you talking the character known as CR (and also a BOATER!?!)

Not only am I not sure who Chuck is, but I did not have you down as being there at all Eric. Did you post earlier? Or tell me? Well, regardless, I need boaters now so I'm glad to have you along.

Right now, if no one else cancels, I'm three off over on nonboaters assuming Chuck is CR - a boater canceling per Eric (I could be guessing wrong, but I can't think of any other 'Chucks'). Still 2 over.

I don't mind taking 2 people in my 20+ footer. Boaters, please PM me if you prefer to only have 1 nonboater so I can do the draw tomorrow. Thanks.
