Title: Boat Flip
Post by: jcox7 on August 19, 2007, 04:05:51 PM
The boat did not flip over he had a seal in his livewells where they empty go out and was takeing on water then his bilige pumps burnt up and he couldnt get his boat on plane to try to get rid of the water that way the weeight and waves caused the boat to roll over but not while they were driving.  he had the boat towed to a marina upside down they fliped it back over and it was at elizabeth sat morning it needs alot of work done to it and he lost alot of tacle and equip.  I carry an extra bilige pump and hose with me along with a spare battery just for this situation.

Thanks for the update, the FLW staff told my friend "the boat had flipped over" which can mean a variety of things. Glad to see no one was hurt.

Thanks Ckev

I remember seeing a boat roll over like that at the dock years ago on Sandusky Bay. They did NOT latch and lock their lids. FLOOP goes all the tackle to the bottom of muddy Sandusky Bay.

I carry an extra pump with a long hose and long wire harness too with a switch and alligator clips. I've loaned it out a number of times. I have a nice leak now too after that last Erie tournament.

I think a hose in the back came lose. Have to take two batteries out to get underneath and see what gives, but it sure adds to the 'excitement' of the Great Lakes to be taking on a LOT of water without even having it come over the sides!!!

I hope the boater had good insurance. These things are bad enough without insult to injury. I'm just glad no one was hurt - job #1 - no one gets hurt.

What would a boat owner need for insurance for a situation like this?
???

The average tournament angler and/or avid bass angler usually needs more insurance than just default boat insurance. Many policies have a limit small enough that it wouldn't cover a fraction of lost tackle, rods, reels and other equipment in the boat.

Some policies cover things attached to the boat, like electronics and some may not. With the average cost of our electronics, that alone would max most angler's loss coverage out.

Additionally for us Great Lakes anglers, some boat insurance does not provide coverage for 'coastal waters,' which can include the Great Lakes. Make sure and ask about that.

What is usually required is that riders are added to the policy to cover additional fishing equipment up to the dollar amount you think you would need for a total loss.

I highly recommend calling Bob Luellen at Worldwide Marine (http://www.worldwidemarineins.com/) - 800-339-1235. He is a bass and walleye boat angler, and the leader in performance boat insurance. Bob has been involved in designing marine insurance programs.

Even if you don't decide to buy your insurance from Bob at Worldwide, you'll gain a great deal of valuable knowledge and be much better off for it just by talking to Bob - 800-339-1235.
