Title: Sanford/Wixom Lake week night tournaments
Post by: Big dreams on April 09, 2014, 07:21:22 AM
Is anyone interested in doing these again?  They use to be rotating the lakes each week and go on Wednesday from 6-9 PM.  I would like to see that go again if possible.

I would be interested if these started happening again. Those were fun to do when a decent amount of boats would show up

I might be interested in one or two at Sanford. Team or singles?

It was $20 per boat if I remember correctly.  Could fish up to two people per boat.  Tom, do you have a contact for who did it before?

I talked to one of the guys that's was normally at those. He said it is probably not happening. Nbaa has taken over the weeknight events, most those guys that were apart of the old Tuesday night thing have gone over to nbaa

That's too bad.
Title: Re: Sanford/Wixom Lake week night tournaments

If it was $20 per boat with 100% payout, the payout would probably still be better then NBAA...  :D If anyone just wants to meet up and just fish for fun let me know, I plan on trying to make it out there once a week if I can and just work on learning the lake better. It's the closest lake to my house so my girlfriend and I are going to try and get out there more this year.

I think I will be on Sanford on C&R opener. Not sure if it will be that productive, but we will see. I plan on Slowly running jerkbaits, Carolina's, and maybe break out some blade baits on the weed lines next to the channels.

I will be on Sanford possibly both days for C&R. The lake can be tough early but you can find some good ones. Water clarity will probably suck for a little bit but I guess that depends on how much rain we get between now and then

If we could get a handful of guys, we could always start up our own weeknight thing and see what happens. At the end of these a couple years ago we were just weighing fish in the bag with a handheld digital scale. Doesn't have to be anything too serious. I could possibly find a couple more boaters to do it
Title: Re: Sanford/Wixom Lake week night tournaments
Post by: Big dreams on April 10, 2014, 11:47:33 AM
It gives me a chance to get out and fish for a few hours... I am in.  I have an extra weigh bag we can use and a scale if nobody has the pro series scale.  I suggest we keep it at $20/boat and 5 fish limit.  Switching lakes is a cool idea too.  I recommend using the launch at the store though.  The launch at the beach is tricky (maybe its just me).

What do you guys think?

Kram, where abouts are you at?  I live 3 miles from the DNR launch on Wixom.

I wouldn't mind using the launch at the store. It's cheaper and at the county they close the gates at sundown or sometimes earlier

I'm up for it as well.. I never launched at the store you guys are talking about. Always from the beach. Gonna have to let me know where it is. I plan on doing a TON of fishing this summer in both Sanford and Wixom, and some in Secord. I live in Auburn so I'm just a small ride from all of em. I'm not familiar with any of them except Sanford. And in Sanford it is probably only 10% lol.. I was always a big walleye bay guy since I used to live on it the prior 8 years up until last August. I bought a brand new Nitro Z-7 Sport (wish it was a regular Z-7 but my old lady wasn't in agreement and needed something to lay out on in the summer). Lol..... Anyways it's rigged to the britches..

I'm just west of Bay City in Monitor Township, about 30 minutes from Sanford. I wouldn't be able to get to Wixom in time for anything but I would definitely do a few at Sanford. The store launch for sure, I am buying a season pass there this year if I can track down the owners and if they are still doing the season pass thing.  If I remember correctly they used to do a season pass for like $50, so it's well worth it if they are still doing that. I will be fishing Sanford quite a bit this year, really want to learn the lake better. I can usually make it to the launch at Sanford by about 5:40.

Great!  Hopefully we can get a few other people to come as well.  I might be able to get few folks from the club as well.  Put the word out guys and let us know if anyone else wants to get in on this.

The season pass at the store last season was $55.  The owners I believe go out of state for the winter so they should be back soon. That ramp was getting a little un even last season so hopefully they fix that. I'll contact a few other guys and maybe we can make this happen

Do we want to keep it one lake or alter it with Wixom?
Title: Re: Sanford/Wixom Lake week night tournaments

I can do either, but if its at the fallout of losing others I can manage with just Sanford. Plenty of water.. Can all have a few beers afterwards.. would be a lot of fun if we can get it together

I would only fish Sanford but I won't be able to fish every week anyways.  Maybe just every couple of weeks for me so no big deal if you guys want to fish Wixom.  Thats a fun lake too, jI ust can't get there in time from work.  I will just show up when I can at Sanford.  Should be a good time!
Title: Re: Sanford/Wixom Lake week night tournaments
Post by: gmetime24 on April 11, 2014, 07:04:09 AM
The couple guys I talked to would maybe be able to do it here and there. One said he is fishing a lot of tournaments already and doesn't want to make his fish tight lipped by catching them all the time. The other guy is not sure because of his work schedule. I wouldn't be able to make every week either depending on my work schedule.

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to just see when the guys on here can make it and just do these get togethers when we can. It doesn't have to be a tourney even just a handful of days spent out on the water

I usually fish with Tom (gmetime24) being that I don't have a boat but if he was unable to make or he wanted to bring someone else and one of you other guys didn't want to fish solo I would love to partner up and get one of your boats.

That sounds good to me as well, more of a social thing where we can just meet up and fish and have fun. Doesn't matter to me if money is involved or is a tournament, I just like being out on the water and having fun fishing. Hang out for a bit after, have a beer, that sounds like a good time to me.

Yes sir.  Sometimes the tournament aspect as well as secrecy takes away from fishing being fun.  Tom and myself are not shy about saying what worked and what did not.  With that said, I would like to propose we put some dates on our calendars for two days a month.  That way it wont feel like a hastle to go each week and we will have it on our schedule so we know to look forward to it.

I propose:

Wednesday evening events from 6 pm until 9 pm (9:30 if enough light)
June 11th and 25th
July 16th and 30th
August 13th and 27th
September 10th and 24th

$20 per boat (optional) or (bragging rights :)  which ever we decide at the ramp
5 fish limit
We will weigh the fish in a bag using a hand scale
Alabama rigs are allowed  ;D

Secret sharing following each event

What do you all think?

Those should work for me. June 25th is the only day I know for sure I can't make

Most of them work well for me as well. I am also unavailable on June 25th, will be leaving for camping on the 26th at Mullett Lake so will be getting everything packed up for that, and also July 30th I will be camping down at Algonac State Park on the St. Clair River and fishing LSC for a few days. Everything else sounds good. We could also get together some Wednesday evening coming up here in May and just get together and meet everyone and just go out for some catch and release fun. May 14th would be a good day for me and pending weather I was already planning on going to Sanford that day.

June 25th is a no go for me as well all the rest look good to me. Now I have to go back to being nice to gmetime24 so he will let me fish off his boat

I checked the dates and I should be good to go for some of them. I will be bringing out my 6 year old boy with me on a few of the nights if that's ok with you guys. Which I'm sure it is. Lol! I'm also definitely good to go on May 14th as well. And whoever is gonna be on Sanford opening weekend, also let me know because I will be there both Saturday and Sunday. As a matter of fact I drove by Sanford today and stopped into the Beach to take a look. Ice is pretty much gone in the whole lake with the exception of portions of the east side both north and just south of the 10 bridge. I walked out on the docs at the launch and so far the clarity of the water is not so bad, especially for Sanford this early. I know the rain will determine things though.

Last year the clarity on Sanford was zero.  That remained true for a good portion of the summer.  Not sure about spring.

Since not many can make the June 25th, do you want to reschedule that date or skip it?

I should be able to make that may 14th day as well. As for the June 25th day I'm ok either way, skipping it or trying to reschedule.  It would have to be the Wednesday after the 11th for that to work for me. I also noticed July 16th is my birthday but I still might be able to make that one

Coop- I will be on Sanford probably Saturday and possibly Sunday depending how we do during opening day. I will be in a white and blue sea ray with a platform and pedestal seat built on the front. Also have a bow mount minn kota and will probably be with 2 other guys. If you see me come say hello

Depends on what the water clarity might be like on the north end. Most likely I will be sticking to the main lake between US10 and the flats

Ok. I plan on checking the north lake in the AM. Then headed back to main lake.

Lets not plan on the 25th and skip that date.  The other dates are legit though.

Also, even if we wanted to alternate between Sanford and Wixom, we couldn't.  Wixom is scheduled to be dropped 8-12 feet beginning in June and coming back up in September.

Not sure if anyone is interested but the website for tracking the Wixom Lake Dam Project is www.wixomlakeassociation.org

If you go there, they do have conflicting information.  On the main page, it has a link to "Wixom Lake Draw Down Update" and it states the work is postponed a year until September 2014.  At the top of the page there is a link to "News or Reviews" and that states the draw down will be June-August 2014.  Once says 4 feet and one says 8 feet.

I will try contacting a board member to see if they can provide any updates or accurate information.  Right now, it is set up for either of the two options above.

The park closes normally close to sunset. The store half way up the lake stays open and if we wanted to hang out after for a beer or 2 it would be much easier
Title: Re: Sanford/Wixom Lake week night tournaments
Post by: Coop on May 28, 2014, 03:42:06 PM
I'm in favor of the store as well. The park closes way too early. I don't want to get locked in. I like the launch at the store and like you said they don't close you out. Plus it's more centralized on the lake so we can get where we need to be and back sooner, which leaves more time to fish.

This keeps changing.  Last time I spoke to one of the lake association members, it doesn't sound like it will happen this year.  You can check into this on their website wixomlakeassociation.org.

Good luck on sanford. They just sprayed for weeds last week. Had our BASS team event there sat.  Could not see any farther down than 6 9 inches.  We left the event almost 2 hours early.  Absoutly no fish hitting for us.

Seems they have been spraying all lakes in the tit chain lately.  Secord, Smallwood, and wixom have all been sprayed in the past 3 weeks.

Good luck out there.  My boat is in the shop now.  I hope to have it back by early next week.  Then I have to take the TM in to have it serviced as it keeps shutting off.  The tech said he thinks it might be water in the lower unit....   Boy this sport is expensive.  darn close to selling everything!

It's definitely fishing tougher. I hate the weed kill but you just gotta make the right adjustments. Last night we caught about 20 in a little over an hour and then it slowed right down. Most fish were small with a nice 3.5er being big fish of the night. The wind was blowing hard but when we found the good grass it was pretty good action. Water clarity was a foot in some areas and only inches in others. Water temp 72-75
