Title: Favorite Lake
Post by: fishstick on January 31, 2007, 10:33:16 AM
Whats everyones favorite lake or lakes? because I know its hard to narrow it down to just one!

Mine would have to be the Portage Chain in Pinckney its close about a 15 min drive for me and theres a whole bunch of different lakes on it. Its got deep stuff shallow stuff and current since the huron river runs through it. Its got big largemouths, big smallmouths and the scenery can be ok at times to ;). You can catch fish any way you want to out there and they are almost always biting!!! my favorite time out there is real late in the fall its just to bad they close the ramp up and drop the water...

some of my other favorites...HALFMOON!!!,Thompson, Whitmore, Wamplers

  ;D

Small boat launch...Not alot of deep water.. Lots of shallow flats..  I would say a 10-15 boat tournament max. I did hear they fixed up the boat launch last year. It was horrible launching there between the shallow water and weeds but its a big bass factory...

Thanks, we will have to look at it for next year for our one on ones. We draw to many boats in our weeknight to go there.

Now back to our regular scheduled post. :D

My favorite lake to fish is also Muskegon and White Lake. If you get lucky you may run into some BASS anglers up there like I did a couple years ago and they said these lakes fish a lot like lakes in the south. I love the fact that they are fairly big and have lots of potential everywhere. Some of my honorable mentions are Hamlin, Spring lake/Grand River, and maple lake in Paw Paw.

                        Good Posting. Excited already

saginaw river(cause i couldn't find them in the bay) i fished the state federation there last year and it got locked to the river(bad weather) and had a great time, lots of smallies and largemouth, not many bigger then 3 lbs but they all fight like 4 lbs.........found myself sneaking back over there 3-4 times last year (and it's a 45 min drive for me) and sacked them everytime, not to mention i was the only boat on the river everytime!!!!!........what a difference when you get somewhere the fish haven't seen many lures :-X :-X :-X

                              six lakes north of ionia/white lake :- ;D ;D ;D

I wish I had an all time favorite lake.  I like White Lake and I am growing very fond of the Grand River.  I think it is coming back and it going to be a great fishery again.

I had a great day on Mona Lake last year so I need to give it an honorable mention.

I also have to mention the Kalamazoo River.  If any of you want to catch small mouth like it was your job, head down to the Kzoo River.

Hard to pick one lake. Portage Chain, Half Moon Chain, St Clair, Thompson, Secord, Lancer, Wixom, etc. So many lakes so little time.

Long Lake (North of Alpena)..It would take over 20lbs to win a tournament up there and there are very few boats and recreational traffic..White lake to the west...East side I would have to say Saginaw bay/River...and the St Clair river.

They did indeed put a new ramp in a Tamarack.  Good lake, too.  Additionally, Townline, Mecosta, Hardy, Six Lakes, Rainbow, Pine River, Isabella.  Hard to go wrong in this neighborhood actually.

Hey Eric, I recently move to Big Rapids from Alpena and I was wondering about some of those lakes you mentioned. I have fished townline and had a blast throwing horny toads. Just curious how mecosta and the others were.

Lake Ovid.

for sure... well, maybe Mullett Lake...?

spring and fall for sure. Yeah.

Although... when I go fun fishing or practicing on Saginaw Bay, I usually seem to find the dumbest big bass anywhere??

But Lake St. Clair...? Just about anytime... (shoot, I forgot about Lower Crooked...)

This thread is someone's idea of torture, isn't it?

Well, before the BFL on Burt/Mullett last year I would have said the Elk/Torch chain. I realize I have only spent 5 days on Burt/Mullett and many a day on Elk and Torch, but I have been dreaming of going back since the day my wife made me come home after the tournament. I have never seen so many TOADS in my life as I did that week. There aren't too many places in extreme northern Michigan that I have been to that I didn't fall instantly in love with.

Cass is my all time favorite lake only because I have only fished St. Clair once and that was back in the era of Poorboy's Guide Service, LLC where their motto is you wear it we'll soak it.

I have a feeling Clair is going to move to the top of the list this season.

Billy, there is a Tuesday night club that fishes different lakes throughout the area.  always open to new members, and I may even be in need of a partner this year.  Mecosta is usually a great lake as are most of the lakes around the area.  Get in touch with me and we'll go fishin.

LG, I talked to Gambler the other night, and we shared the concern of you guys not getting any Skeeter money if I come and win all of the toutnaments.  So, maybe it's best if I don't fish.  Otherwise, I think I'd like to.

My answer is obvious.  Kent lake in Milford/Brighton.  Close to home and loaded with bass!  I also love LSC as well.  But the past year was a little tricky with my boat in the condition it WAS in.  Its better now, but sure enough, as soon as my boat problems were solved, my engine blew!  I am ready to put those oar hooks or whatever they are called on the gunnels and just get some long oars.

There are so many good lakes in this state.  Every year I try to pick a body of water I have not fished before.  This year I will be on Houghton for the NBAA classic. that will be a first and I would like to try Secord up that way.

Around home, hands down it is St. Clair.  Even on a bad day going for bass you might get a 40" muskie to smack a spinnerbait, a sturgeon out in the river, or walleye on the mile roads.  Just a blast.

Inland is tough.  I love Stony Creek in the spring.  There are just toads out there.

honorables: Cass, Big Lake, Kent

My favorite hands down.. Hamlin.  Just a great all around lake.

Hardy and Tippy Dams are probably my second favorites.

If I had to pick a lake down south I guess I would pick Coldwater.  Whenever I have fished this lake I have had so much fun.  Of course I had a great partner and teacher.

Way up north would be Elk and Torch.  With Crystal Lake a close second.

To many to pick from.... :)

Actually, I did fish a tuesday night fun tournament with a co-worker. It was on a small lake (todd lake - I think). I fished it with a guy with the last name Mieras. Maybe it was the same one.

Boy,  you guys fish all over the state. Since I'm here in Oakland County, I'm going to make it a habit of trying more lakes like Lower Pettibone, Woodland, Thompson, I hate Kent,( never catch anything),White,Lotus/Maceday, Oakland/Woodhull. The New Hotmap (Navionics E-3) has The Pinckney Chain on it finally, so I'm going to try it. I fish mostly LSC, The Detroit River and Downriver before the Mouth into Lake Erie. After work I want to do a couple hours somewhere close. Since I work in Detroit on the East side, I drag the boat to work and leave from there. I'll either launch at Harley Ensign or Blossom heath in Grosse Point.

St. Clair.  It has it's tough times (as I mentioned in another post), but for the most part, I never go home without catching some good Smallmouth.  It's perhaps the easiest place to catch numbers of fish I have ever been.

My favorite lake to fish would definetly have to be Portage Lake in Onekama.  Portage is a great lake for size and quantity of both largemouths and smallmouths, and has a variety of different structure to fish.  Too bad it is about 3 hours from my house, but I still manage to make it up there about 12 days a year.

Close runner-ups: Lake Lancer in Sugar Springs and Arnold Lake in Harrison.  Lancer can be a big largemouth factory and Arnold is just a fun little lake to fish.

Lakes closer to my house that I like are: Morrison, Chemung, and Lake Lansing is actually starting to grow move up the list.

Union or Cass.

Union because i live on it and fish many days a year. although Union is my worst tourny lake.  hope to change that this year.
Cass because the water and bottom structure are pretty much like Union.  Plus they both have lots of Smallies.

This is really a hard one for me and I have resisted commenting, because if I'm on the water anywhere .... that place is usually my favorite.  My mom use to sit me on the curb with a stick, string and a button and I would sit fishing in the storm grate forever. Good training for fishing out of the back seat. However, I really enjoy Duck Lake in Interlochen. Hamlin Lake in Ludington is also very hard to beat. Going over to St. Clair and Erie I classify as an adventure, and I look forward with great anticipation to each trip even though I sometimes get a little panicked when the waves get big. Portage Lake in Onekama can be my favorite at times especially in May and June. The Torch Chain, Burt and Mullet, GT Bay, Long Lake, Manistee, man I can't really pick. Then there is Lake Tahoe, where my two sons live. How does one choose!  If I really have to I guess Big Bass Lake north of Baldwin is probably my all time favorite because I have spent the last 20+ years there sitting in my cabin watching the seasons go by.

Ahh tough one here id have to break this one down. Since i fish a bunch of different areas. In Michigan id say its a tie between Muskegon and white, with Pentwater a close one when the time is right there, its a toad factory. Maxinkuckee lake here in indiana is a blast not toad smallies but a ton of keepers. and then my all time favorite lake is Table Rock you got it all there largeheads, smallies, and spots all biggns too.

I'm surprised to see so many lakes and no mention of Grand....   Wow.

Grand lake is smallie heaven, it takes a 4 pound average to even think of winning up there in the fall.  And in the spring?  Forget about it.  Pack some bandages, you'll need them for your thumb.

Honorable mentions:  Black, Mullet & Douglas

Most interesting:  Wixom.  So much fishable water, miles and miles of banks to explore.  Any pattern you can think of. :)
