Slightly late on this report. We got out on Saturday morning and found it to be a tougher bite than it had been. On the good side, the water clarity was much better than expected with the windy previous week. Just about everywhere I fished the water was clear down to 15'. We started out South of 9 Mile and couldn't get much going. Hit a few largemouth spots and only got a few small ones. I moved South toward the Detroit River and things picked up. We found an area in 9 FOW that produce well. They were mainly smaller fish, but the numbers were better. We had a couple of 3s mixed in. We kept at it, working hard to make the fish bite and overall we got about 20 with a couple of 3s and 2 that went over 4. The rest were mainly keeper size. Note: we only fished 4 hours.
It's a real post-spawn bite out there. There are a wave of smaller fish on beds, but not in the numbers they were a few weeks ago. The better fish all seem to be coming from deeper water. The wind picked up, so we weren't able to go check some summer spots, but I suspect there are fish in some of the typical summer areas already. I intend to confirm Wednesday.
Also, the fishfly hatch is happening now. It wasn't much on Saturday but judging from the amount of fishflies at my house today, I anticipate finding lots of them on the water. I always do fairly well fishing deep, right under the pods of husks, so I'm excited to get out there and see how it goes.
Oh and BTW - It's Michigan...so they're Fish Flies. ;) It is June after all. LOL
