Title: Thunder Bay Smallies
Post by: jmoore9543 on May 23, 2012, 11:01:21 AM
I have never fished Thunder Bay, would it be worth my time there, or am I better off fishing somewhere else up north. Have a cottage by Alpena, but never fished the bay. I imagine there are some giants out there, I usually fish Burt/Mullet, Grand Lake, Charlevoix, Traverse Bay. How does Thunder Bay compare to these places. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thunder Bay has some real big, real dumb smallies. I would give you some specifics but it has been a long time since I have been there. I have heard it is better than it was since I was last there but I don't have any up-to-date detail.

Last time I was there, the smallies were somewhat spotty but once you found them it was worth it. Some of the wrecks hold smallies and some of the rock bars out from and in the big, shallow bay to the left of the river. I imagine they are a lot shallower now than when I was there so you would want to be real careful.

I caught a bunch of salmon one evening on Bomber (Cordell) Spots. That was fun. I sure enjoyed prospecting out there. All those other lakes are pretty good too. Tough to have so many good choices!

We are very fortunate to be able to have so many places to go to catch bass. Sometimes it's hard to decide just where to go.
