Post by: fuzzygrub1611 on April 07, 2011, 03:30:20 PM
Has anyone ever used a drift sock. Thinking about getting one for those windy days on the lake.

As a walleye guy that bass fishes
I have 4 or 5 in the boat at all times

The best ones out there are the Amishoutfitters
And there cheaper then buying one of the other brands in the sporting store

I use both the 18" and the 22" (in pairs)
you can use them to control the drift or for trolliing
It's as simple as, tie the bag to a short line and hook it on the cleat.

Definintely a good tool to help with boat control.  Just don't tie it off the front or back - ALWAYS the side.  A rouge wave can fill a boat if you are tied off to the front or back.

I used it more in the days before SI.  Now I tend to fish more exact spots.  Even in crazy rough stuff, I will use the t/m to hold on exactly what I want.  Last year in one of the BFL's I had waves rolling across my deck all day and my pump running non stop - but I caught 'em all on tiny little rocks in the middle of nowhere.  The drifting guys would just blow right by.

If the fish are scattered or if you are fishing a big area or prefishing, they are great.

Fuzzy, I got two on my boat.  Bought them at Bass Pro Shops.  They are the Minn Kota ones.  They are a necessity when fishing LSC or Erie.  Especially on the real windy days.  You will get the use out of them especially if your planning on taking that new boat to LSC or Erie eventually.

You may find this to be a helpful tip:  If you can find one of those ropes used for docking that has the stretch material or the rubber inserts (I think BPS has them) that give when the waves are pushing the boat, you'll have a much more stable fishing experience because the boat won't jerk every time a wave tightens your drift sock line.
