Title: Nobody has anything to say about the outcome of the Classic today?
Post by: Mike S. on February 20, 2011, 08:21:47 PM
I can't believe there's not a post on here about that yet.  I watched it live on Bassmaster.com.  I want to tell, but I don't want to be "that guy", and spoil it for somebody who is waiting to watch it next weekend on ESPN.  Oh do I want to tell.  There were some hogs caught.  I wish I was there.  Well anyways, I won't spoil it.  Maybe somebody else will. ???

I won't spoil it either but I was blown away by the weights.  The "winner" finished with 28lbs and set the new Classic all time catch record by a huge margin.  It makes me want to go fishing at the Delta.  I was honestly hoping someone else would win but I'm not surprised with the outcome.

No doubt.  I don't think you can spoil it... it's all over every site on the web.

KVD wins his record tying 4th Bassmaster Classic by nearly 11 lbs over Arron Martins.  28 lb bag today sealed it up.

KVD credited all his signature Quantam gear spooled with 20lb fluorocarbon, and two lures (Signature Spinnerbait in Chartreuse Sexy Shad Exclusive to BassPro& his new Strike King 1.5 Square Bill in Chart/Blk), better get them fast, because they will sell fast!!!

Huge bass kept moving in locally on Lake Cataouatche while way down in Venice, the water also rose, but surface temp dropped 10 degrees. On Friday, I was in Venice with Indiana federation angler Dave Watson and I was amazed by the number of bass and the fun fishing for them. But that was before the big temperature drop.

Lake Cataouatche was a much tougher bite. Not everyone caught them there good or at all. I was impressed that Ryan Said was fishing very nearby, but not quite on the hottest spot. Of course, he honored the other anglers water, just fishing the part he practiced.

The weather was beautiful here again, around 70. Not sure I'm leaving. I may stay until early April. There's some tall tule grass I want to check out!

What did everybody think of the new MC?  Although I am sure he is a super nice guy I did not care for his style

"Boom ShaKalaKa...G-G-G-G-G-Giant Bass here at the Bassmaster Classic in New Orleans"....  oh well, wish i had his job. IMO not any better than the last guy but not any worse....  I do like his "heavy" guy sense of humor------easy to relate.  ;D

The first couple weigh-ins were pretty rough. Going to have to give him some time to work into the job. He did a better job on the final weigh-in but plenty of room for improvement. He worked his butt off this week, entertaining folks thru the fog delays and his voice was nearly gone by yesterday.

I heard a couple rumors right after the final weigh-in...

- Anglers were suggesting KVD be tested for steroids and looks like there might be a pee test next year
- looking at changing the payouts next year to $100K for 1st and $500K for 2nd

Congrats to KVD for really crushing the competition!

I was looking for a link for the spinnerbait, but last night I couldn't find one fast enough. Who has the best price on it?

Did you read Don Barone's piece on the young fire fighter fighting pancreatic cancer?  Well done and way to go GMan! It was an inspirational moment not lost on any of us I'm sure.

Paliniuk's tribute to Kerschal was also well done. Come to find out he's a buddy of a friend I met down at the Federation National Championship a few years back, Ben "Chainsaw" Schilling. I hope to get a chance to meet and maybe ride with him at Pickwick or Wheeler.

KVD is the man. No one can argue that. Even Martens said he's something else. Proof there are aliens on Earth!! And I think we should bring back Fishburne, or my number one choice, let Zona host it!! Talk about hilarious.

In the press conference KVD was asked what makes him so much better than everyone else. He responded the better fishermen pick up on the subtleties and adjust as things are changing. He went on to say the bass were changing by the hour in the classic and he was the only angler in the area that made the right adjustments. He watched the other boats around him not pick up this until it was to late. This is what makes him the best bass fishermen in the world.

Zona would have been the right choice for MC. Mercer annoyed the bajesus out of me.

Zona would be great, but I fear he's too busy to take on another job. Maybe though, he's there during Elite events on Sunday for ESPN, and sometimes he's there on Day 3 of Elite events.
I'm going to let Mercer soak a while before I give my opinion of his job as MC. I fear people expect him to keep up the comedic role for hours. Most comics just do bit pieces. Being thrust up on the big stage with a lot of unscripted time, makes it an awfully tough job. He's awfully good with his Facts of Fishing show. He's got the background as a tournament angler. I've got to let him soak a while.

The tribute that Paliniuk made was awesome. Quite a moment, but I really fought the tears with the GMan. What an emotional moment bringing in Kevin Oldham. I will be holding that young man in my heart and in my prayers. Class act award for B.A.S.S. and the GMan. I hope the experience and Ike's catch phrase buoys the young man in his battle. "Never give up!"

obviously KVD is awesome and idolized by most of us, but i tell you i am most amazed by the fact he didnt even go down to practice before the cutoff date.....he said well i was just to busy with Christmas, and the family, and hunting..... ;D  the guy is amazing, he had that tournament planned out a long time ago...veteran at his best

I lika da Mercer. ESPECIALLY if he annoys Wags!! He must be doing something right! ;D

I had a feeling about that ahead of time so I shook his hand and said, "good job Dave!"

I think it was a great move too. No one can meet everyone's personal expectations but he meets mine. Funny guy. Smart too!

You can tell how much the sport means to him too! Maybe it is easier in person but I think it will show up on TV too.

Every time Mercer said "at the Bassmasters Classic", it reminded me of Farley's Matt Fowley "down by the river"

Mercer - "your in second place AT THE BASSMASTERS CLASSIC"

http://www.hulu.com/watch/4183/saturday-night-live-down-by-the-river (http://www.hulu.com/watch/4183/saturday-night-live-down-by-the-river)

Fowley - "your going to live in a van DOWN BY THE RIVER"

Same emphasis and same "husky" voice!

LOL! Funny. Great observation.
I wished he was still alive. What a tragedy.
I hope Mercer is able to learn from this.

Dan I know that Boom Shaka Laka was your favotire song at one time. :D

I think Mercer did a great job especially considering it was the first time.  He brought some comic relief between the times when fish were getting weighed and that was quite awhile at times.
I have more stuff to post when i get time including Brandon Palaniuk's Kerchal tribute.
And Cy...I know EXACTLY where KVD and Martens were fishing if you want to take me down there next year! ;D

That's because he throws thousands of more casts than anyone else in the field.  The man is a machine.  Even watching him in other situations like on Zona's show and then Stricker's.  He never quits casting.  The man is amazing.  He has a gift to be able make the subtle changes he makes hour to hour.  He's a machine.  A fine tuned machine.
