Title: St Clair boat rental
Post by: big_john_boy on May 26, 2006, 01:43:29 PM
Looking for a boat to rent on St Clair near Selfridge NG base.? The base rental is not open on June 4th and 5th so we need to find a boat on those days.? Any suggestions?

I will be driving up from South Carolina on Saturday the 3rd...

I know I just saw a list somewhere in the last week of boat rental locations. I think there was another up near there... I'll look for it later this weekend and post it once I find it.

Do you remember where you saw the list of rentals?  I have been searching all weekend and only found a 29' twin outboard and a 16' w/7.5 Hp.  I am really looking for something in between that range.

I live on Santee Cooper,  if anyone is headed this way let me know and i can point you in the right direction.

Jimmy's Livery.  It's on Jefferson just South of the St. Clair cuttoff.  You can launch there if you wanted to.  It's only small aluminum boats though.  I don't know of anywhere you can rent bass boats.  That's all I can think of.

All the boat rental places I've heard of on St. Clair only rent 12 to 16 foot boats with small outboards. I'm just not aware of anything larger.

I saw a thread, maybe on www.lakestclair.net in the fishing report forum a week or so ago.

Rev - I thought Jimmy's closed down? Is it back open recently?

I think the best idea would be to call Brian Ward at Selfidge Sport & Tackle, 586-949-2998 ? 45200 Jefferson Ave, Chesterfield, MI
and ask him about rental. He fishes bass tournaments and owns the tackle store right by the Selfridge MDNR ramp.

He might know about other options and I have to believe he knows about all the boat rentals. I should have just suggested this right away.

I actually live about a 1/4mile off of the Cooper River(tailrace canal) in Moncks corner.  I work in Russellville which is the NE corner of Moultrie.  Marion and Moultrie = Santee Cooper

I just found the site searching for fishing reports for St Clair...  My friend and I did go to Erie every year for Smallies...Until he found St Clair... It is a lot safer and you can actually fish if the wind is blowing...

Did y'all do any good down here this spring?  The last Bass i caught in Moultrie was 8#s.  on a homemade plastic shad...Haven't been back since....  I have more fun bream fishing with my 4 and 2 year old girls...
(well almost)

I hadn't heard that.  I was just going on past recollection.  I'd have to drive by there to see.  You're probably right.  I haven't seen any of the Jimmy's boats on the water in a while now that I think about it.

Tell ya what... Jimmy's may not actually be in business anymore as Dan pointed out.  If you can't find a rental place, I'm sure there would be a few guys from GLB here that would be willing to take you out for a while.  I'd be happy to do it if we don't have a club event or tournament going on.  I'm especially available to fish St. Clair during the week.  If I can help, I will.  Don't be shy about asking the guys on this forum, I wouldn't be surprised if you had a few other takers.

Jon Boy,

Are you in the AF?  I know a couple of people from Selfridge ANG.  Lansing HQ also has quite a few bass anglers both Army side and AF side.  I can make a couple of calls for ya.

Jimmy passed away in 2004 I believe. His wife was keeping the place open, but I heard sometime later last year that it closed down. I haven't really heard what happened since.

I have to believe Brian at Selfridge tackle will know something helpful.

The volunteer idea sounds possible too - thanks Rev.

I'll be either working or up at Burt/Mullett.

I think I found the place you are talking about, I belive it is Roy's Boat Harbor now.  They have alum. boat rentals and are located on the south side of the river.  We will stop by there on monday and get out in one of his boats.
Tuesday thru Friday we will have 21' from the base.

I got hold of 5 different guys from Selfridge and Lansing HQ that I know, unfortunately those 2 days are the 2 days immediately after drill weekend.  Everyone is either tied up with the aftermath of drill or taking the days off to compensate.  It doesnt look promising, wish I could do better.  I'll keep checking and PM you if something turns up.

Thanks Brian,  I think we will be just fine, we are going to get a boat from Roy's on Monday and then MWR will be open the rest of the week.  Appreciate all the help...
