Title: Need some motor help please
Post by: mikesmiph on October 31, 2010, 08:29:09 AM
Direction needed please. I have an 87 Merc 150, had it over a year and it runs great. Yesterday, while flying across Kent Lake at 10 mph, It started running rough. I looked down and the temp guage was pegged hot. Shut it down right away. Later in the day, due to other issues, I had to run the big motor again. As long as I idled, the temp didnt come up all the way, but it ran funny. When we got it out of the water, we checked the water intake and it was clear. The hose coming out was clear. Do I check the impeller next? And, if so, what am I looking for? I dont know where to turn next. I can wrench, but I dont know what I'm looking for. Thanks guys.

Mike,
I think the first thing you need to do is put on some water muffs, run the engine and see if you can blow out anything that may be lodged in the tubes. I've got a set you can use or go by Bass Pro and pick some up.

mike,

i have an '88 175 merc black max and same problems at end of last season 2 yrs ago. took it in that winter, had everything checked out from lwr unit to pwr head.
impeller was find, pump, shooting a good stream of water & all.
they finally found top head gasket cracked and was told exhaust getting up into head thus causing the overheating. maybe something to check if you take it in. it ran me about $600.

Not to be a smart-a*s, but I hope you were 'flying' a little fast than that!

It was a little dig at the 25 MPH speed limit on Kent. Veronicas least favorite lake because we cant go fast lol. Also, The Great, The only, Mr. Don has offered to help me with my motor issue. Hopefully will be fixed soon. Thanks guys for all the help.

I thought the speed limit on Kent was 10 mph??    ???   When did they raise it.  I can get on plane and run 25 in my boat.  I might start fishing there.  I am with Veronica.  My least favorite lake too for that very same reason...............can't go fast.  Plus once you start going to LSC and Erie..........why go anywhere else.     :P

Umm, Mike, I saw the speed limit posted at 10mph when I was there.  Do people look at you funny when you throw the tube behind the boat, too?  Ha ha, just kidding.  Good luck with the motor issue.  Mine is acting funny too.  Doesn't like the cold weather.
