Title: boat rental
Post by: Frank on October 09, 2010, 11:57:26 PM
A friend of mine wants to buy a boat, but he thinks he can rent it out on a daily rate.  Is this allowed, or legal?  does he need special insurance?  Has anyone ever heard of someone doing this?  I wish I could find someone who does this when I fly down to Florida.

Thanks,
Frank

I would think it would be similar to a store or camp on a lake doing it. I imagine you need business insurance and there are additional regulations. Maybe he could call one of the businesses that does this and ask them for advice (if he assures them he is not going to compete with them on their water)?

Probably does need some type of business insurance, but I would make absolutely sure that his financier (if applicable) and insurance company will allow and cover for losses possibly incurred by a renter.

He could call Bob at Worldwide Marine Insurance to see if he has any suggestions about insurance 800-339-1235.

There's a place down on Kentucky Lake that i stayed at a few years ago that rents cabins, pontoon boats and small fishing boats. Nothing like a tournament bass boat, but they were decent boats.
