Title: Bait casting reels
Post by: Crookedneck on August 15, 2010, 01:50:33 AM
Has any one use any of the US Reels baitcasters?  I was looking at getting one.  Any opinions or reviews are welcome.

Thanks,
Mike

I wonder if they are made by the same company that makes Johny Morris / BPS / Rick Clunn reels and Pflueger reels? Used to be Silstar if I remember right? I have some Pflueger and BPS-type reels that I like.

All those brands are made by Shakespeare.  They also make a lot Gander Mountain private label stuff or at least the did before Zebco started making stuff for them.

I don't know if US Reel is made by them nor do I know anything about US Reel.

Does Shakespeare actually make their reels, or have them made by another company? Not sure. I could probably find out if I made the effort to make a phone call or two.

The only thing that I know about US reels are they are not made in the US...Of course the only reels that I know that are made in the US are Ardent reels....

Maybe they're made by Ardent? It is surprising how few companies are making all the different 'brands' we use. And it seems to be shrinking all the time.

It is getting that way with everything...Look at boats..Or fishing rods...etc etc

Sorry I haven't had any of their baitcasters, but I did get a BPS Johnnie Morris spinning reel at the beginning of last year that was a rebadged US Reel. I should have taken it back but I got so mad at it that I took it off and threw it in the rod locker and forgot about it until this year and I think it's too late. The drag was crap and must have had a high spot. I broke off a few bigger smallies out on LSC last year with it. I tried flipping the steel drag plat and when that didn't help I tried stoning it flat but it still wasn't smooth. I then stepped on it, only a little, and the bail bent and the frame cracked.

Maybe the actual US Reel brand is better, but I won't be the one to find out.

http://www.usreel.com/Home.aspx (http://www.usreel.com/Home.aspx)  There you go.  Click on the link and go to the US Reel Home Page.  I have used all the Chinese.  Quantum, Daiwa, Penn, Shimano, just to name a few.  I am going to check out Ardent.  U.S. made goes a long way any more.  I would rather pay a little more for a good U. S. product.
