I see there's been a freighter grounded in front of the Pine River since 8/3 when an engine fire caused a power loss. The Norwegian Freighter Sidsel Knutsen took out the #50 marker at the south end of the Middle Grounds (a past target of rogue freighters), then dropped the upstream anchor before swinging around and almost plowing into the Voyager restaurant parking lot!
The sand bar and dropping the downstream anchor stopped the Knutsen just a few feet short of the crash. The freighter hadn't been moved yet as of yesterday since it wasn't blocking traffic.
Some talk on lscn.net forum in The LSCN Boathouse (http://www.lakestclair.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=82987&st=0). Check out the video below one of their users put on their Facebook page of the freighter heading directly for the parking lot. Pretty dramatic!
looks like the cop was reaching for his ticket book! Illegal parking?
Wow, pretty cool.
I went and looked at it on Sunday. It's amazing how big those things are when your only about 20 feet away from them and it's only 530' I couldn't even imagine a 1000 footer. A friend of mine works on the shipping and receiving dock at Cargill. He said he was loading a truck when he heard the horn. He looked up and thought for sure it was going to run into the Voyager parking lot. Here's the link for the story from channel 7 news.

While we were out with the kids a few weekends ago, of course the big ships going right by were a big attraction and they wanted to know what the really big ones looked like. We had the Tregurtha go by and I said, 'that's a really big one.'
Watching some show the other day like Monster Ships, or something similar and it was about the Tregurtha saying it is the biggest ship on the Great Lakes. Soe I guess they did see the big one!!
