I am a big fan of spinnerbaits and I was wondering what kind and sizes does everyone use? I also was wondering how many of you guys and Gals use trailer hooks on those spinnerbaits. I have but tend to get caught up a lot when I use them. Just wondering if you guys have any tricks out there for using spinners that you want to share. Thanks A lot guys
I use spinninbugs alot, I don't throw them without a trailer. I prefer the ones that are free not the stationary ones. Nothing worse than missing a fish on a short bite.
I mostly use 1/2 and 3/4 oz. however if I'm fishing a river and it's fast I will use a bigger 1 oz ledge buster and this usually does produce some dandy smallies.
I could go on and on about spinnerbaits (hence the name) it's one of my favorites. In fact our club is putting on a seminar at our church on thursday and I'm doing the the spinnerbait presentation. Go figure! Anyway if I'm stuggling and not catching fish it's my goto bait. :)
Pulsators and Picassos in the 1/2 ounce. Trailer hook is non-negotiable.
ALWAYS use a trailer hook! I prefer a compact 3/8oz and 1/2oz home made version. Downsize the blades a little bit and burn it for some good reaction bites! The Terminator Tungsten baits are excellent but a bit expensive.
Potter.
I concur witht the trailer hook. I never throw one bare. There are times of the year where I really like a whippy little grubtail. I bite off half the grub so it is about as long as the trailer hook. I always rig it upside down so it stays out of the trailer hook's way. I like pulsators, use to buy all the Supreme spinnerbaits around but the company is currently out of business. I really like Ohio Pro lures spinnerbaits. If you haven't handled and played with one you are missing out on a well made and convenient, has a fast change blade clip, spinnerbait.
Rule #1: Never throw a spinnerbait without a trailer hook.
On cloudy / windy days I use painted blades.
On stained water I use copper blades.
On sunny days / clear water I use smoke blades.
On most days it's pretty tough to beat white on white.
On all days at some point I'll throw a spinnerbait.
I'm not a burner so I normally throw 3/8 oz.
I've been a War Eagle fan for a while now. They seem to catch bass real well. I throw mostly 1/2 oz and 3/4 oz.
I really like Nichol's Pulsators, buttttttt I have never thrown a better spinnerbait than a War Eagle. They have awesome color selections. I love the 1/2 ounce model that is the size of a quarter with the small double willow blades. Anything in a pearl color with gold blades are my favorite colors in any color of water, but my favrorite of them all is one called Spot Remover.
War Eagle 1/2 oz. chartruese willow blades with a gammy trailer hook and Zoom chartruese split tail trailer. That is my best producing spinnerbait.
I think it's the piano wire and the skirts that does it... the wire will rust and break if the plating is cracked off, but you'll catch a bunch of nice bass usually before that happens.
