I was out on Muskegon lake today with a buddy of mine. Not much going on, so I decided that I was going to try to learn how to flip. I tied on a Nemesis jig, and began my learning. It just does not feel right to me not to use my thumb on the spool of a baitcaster. After about 10 or so tries, I buried the hook in my pointer finger. I had just loosened the spool a little bit, so needless to say, I got a back lash as well. I at least know that the hook on that jig is good and sharp! My buddy almost fell out of the boat, du to the fact he was laughing so hard at my bleeding finger. I just felt like sharing this with you guys in hopes that you get a laugh out of it as well.
Indeed I did Mike. LOL
Wait until you swing on a hookset and miss and catch a jig right between the eyes.....It didn't take me long to figure out that I needed safety rated sunglasses when I was flipping and pitching..
Always swing to the left or right (whichever side your buddy is standing on...)
mikeszr800, we'd be laughing WITH you, of course...
Well Mike, at least you did one thing right, you selected the proper jig!!!!!
Isn't what you did considered pitching? Close to flipping, but isn't flipping done without dis-engaging? Just with an armful of line? Maybe I am wrong, someone correct me if so. Same general function, I know, and not a big deal, but I was wondering how you could get a jig in the finger as I was reading. ON the safety rated glasses thing, set the hook on a 3/16 shakey the other year when the water bit my bait, no resistance until my head. Turned fast enough to catch it on the ear, and immediately hit the deck. I thought it went through my head it hit so hard, almost put me out for the count. I had blood running down my face, and was fishing by myself so I didn't know how bad it was until I got back to the dock. Had a headache for days. Now swing sideways.

Your right, he is pitching if he is holding the jig and burying the hook in his finger. Flipping would usually bury the hook in the shin.

I must be doing both wrong?!? I don't bury the hooks in my hand or my shin?!? ;D
There's always confusing between flipping and pitching.
Jigs are awesome baits to learn both techniques on.You couldn't have picked a better bait to start learning.Matter of fact I started on jigs myself too. :)
Ok, whichever I was doing, I ended up with a jig in my finger. At least some people found it amusing.
i know the difference between both but even if im pitching i still call it flipping, it rolls off the tongue better and its still the same basic idea putting baits in tight spots on the short line
For the record, it's flippin' and pitchin', no "g".
If you gonna fish the technique, you gotta talk the language. ;) :D ;D
