As the father of 2 daughters I am glad to see Pam Martin-Wells make a good showing against some of the best anglers fishing has to offer....Way to go.!!!!
I think it's kind of cool, too, but........Why do we make a big deal out of it. Why aren't we making a big deal about a fat person, or a blond person, or a person from a particular state, or an old person, or something else. They are all trying to catch a fish, not have some physical challenge against one another. So nothing should matter except what the scales say at the end of the day. It doesn't matter who puts them there. Fishing is a contest against an animal, not other people. I hope people continue to not realize that though, because you have them beat when they see you pull in the parking lot.
I think it is a big deal just like any other first...Barriers are being broken down and that makes the sport stronger for everyone...
Bass Fishings target audience can double if it offered some appeal to women....That would be good for all of us and maybe get more women out on our Local and regional tournaments..
I remember growing up when Lisa Aikens burst on to the Men's MX scene....She was fast and opened the doors for alot of what has turned into a huge following of women motocrossers....
I would say tournament fishing is more than just fishing against the Fish....Guys like KVD, Skeet, Ike....They flat out want to kick each other's butts...I fish for the competition, If It wasn't for going head to head against 100 anglers or so I would save my entry fees and fish every weekend for fun....For me it is about trying to beat the other guys...If it is all about fishing against the fish then why even have a weigh in...??? We could just fish then drink some beers afterwards...
I understand what you are saying but the competition is there...No it isn't a physical contest between men and women but it is a mental chess match...I seem to remember after a few days on the water being pretty sore though...It may have something to do with my old age.
I too would love to see more participation from women. Its not just in fishing though. A few years ago, they disbanded the WPBA, in bowling. Now I hear they disbanded the Pro bass fishing for women too. Why is this? I cant believe its because there isnt any interest. Maybe Pam will open some big doors for women in the future. Anyway, they look better out on the deck then guys, IMO.
Yeah I don't know why they blow this up either...a bass doesn't know whether your male female or even from this planet. So Its not like being a dude gives you an unfair advantage...I guess part of me just doesn't agree with even letting her qualify for the classic under a special circumstance the WBT. But my hats off to her she is definitely a stick! Maybe we will see her get in through the opens or Elites in the future.
I agree, to me the first women still hasn't QUALIFIED for the classic. I will have a ton of respect for the first women who makes it to the classic the same way everyone else has to.
