Title: What braid should I use?
Post by: Mike S. on February 04, 2010, 05:26:16 PM
I have just decided to get into flipping this year.  I have seen my cousin pull out some nice fish in our local tournaments here in Muskegon.  I will be flipping in heavy weeds, and I am dead set on using braided line, so which one is the best?  I am thinking 65 to 80 pound test is what Iwill use, so lets hear your opinions.

I've always like Power Pro.  I've never had a single problem with it.

two votes pro POwer Pro.  i have tried all the others and PP is just the easiest to use.  always stays round, doesnt fray nearly as bad as some of the others.  Stren Braid would be my 2nd choice but i think they changed it or something.  i have been using PP for the last 3 years.

Power pro 30lb.  Never managed to break that stuff.  Ever.  Frayed it?...yep.  Broke it?...not yet.

Power Pro all the way.  50 or 65 lb.  I have used nothing but Power Pro for the last several years.  I did get a recommendation at the Novi show to check out the Suffix braid.

I've been using P-Line Spectrex braid for 4 or 5 years now. 50# for frogs and 65# for flippin heavy cover. Never a problem with either one.

Another vote for Power Pro Mike, 80lb for the heavier baits and 50 for the lighter. Works real well on Muskegon and another lake about 12 miles north but dont tell anyone. ;D

65-50lb green power pro for pitching heavy cover or thick grass and for frogging. 30-20lb green power pro for ripping traps from grass.

When I fish a body of water where flipping is a possibility, there are three flippin rods in my rod box. Two are spooled with Power Pro 80lb., and the third is spooled with PLine 25lb. CXX Green.

I like the PLine for fishing open water like around docks, under pontoons, and that type of fishing. For this type of fishing where there's not much line out, I like having a line with a little stretch to absorb the shock on the hookset.

I use the PP for fishing heavy weed cover, and frog/rat fishing. It casts better than the heavy PLine, and works well for hooksets with a lot of line out, or in heavy cover.

I use all P-Line Spectrex IV. The best quality superbraid available. I was a Power Pro user before that. When P-Line came on as a sponsor of the web site, I was using their other lines prior to that - really like Halo, but not their braid. I decided to try their braid - Spectrex and I'm glad I switched.

I can say I've had less problems with Spectrex than any other braid, but that is not completely accurate. The accurate statement is that I've had no problems with Spectrex. I've used pretty much all of their various weights for different techniques and all have performed trouble free - a rarity in our sport, and a welcome one.

No fraying. No knotting. No breaking. Handles very well on and off the reel. For flipping and pitching into cover I've used 30 and 50 pound test a lot and some of the 65, which I've used more for frogging. I now have some of the 80 lbs test line left from battling those vicious and brutal Amazon peacock bass (again, no fraying despite super strong fish running into trees, no break offs, more time for fishing). The way that handled, I plan on using it a lot now too for heavy flipping and slop fishing. Braid can be too soft and too limp in my mind, causing excess backlashes, looping around the rod tip and even cutting itself. Spectrex has just the right mix to minimize all of that dramatically while still casting very well.

Anything that reduces the amount of hassle with equipment is very valuable to me and P-Line Spectrex IV (http://www.p-line.com/product_detail.php?id=103&PLINESESSID=37a42483e648a34d4c762c3f80f68c03) does that perfectly. I can't ask for any more than that. Plus, they are the official forum sponsor. A win-win for me and GreatLakesBass.com (which means all of you too).

I promise that anyone who tries it will be glad they did. You will never regret it. I have complete faith in that because I use it myself all the time.

I might buy the line back from you... but I don't think I'll have to. P-Line (http://www.p-line.com) makes excellent products. I haven't had all those line problems for a while now... funny... since I switched over to P-Line. Hmmm??

I want the boat bad.  Things didn't quite work out how we planned for a boat this year.  Money ended up having to go to other places than we had planned.  Therefore, I am a year away from a new boat.

It's the same line. You'll see in the description below why they call it Spectrex IV (4)

You can always search basspro.com items right here on GreatLakesBass.com on this page: FEATURE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. Just enter P-Line Spectrex in the search box and it should come up with an number of options. You will only go to the basspro.com site if you click on a sales link.

It's one of my very old style pages, but the code still works correctly. (Sorry about the ladies lingerie items coming up first in the default search... happens every time around Valentines Day - I haven't figured out how to block it yet)

OFFER NO LONGER AVAILABLE.
