Title: Asian Carp
Post by: MIBassKid on November 05, 2009, 12:36:19 AM
Does anyone know what the latest news is on them? Do they have the newest electrical barrier in place yet or no? I knew they were supposed to do it a few years ago but never heard anything on it. Maybe I am just waaay behind.

About a week ago I read the electronic barrier is only at about 25% power due to many issues including safety concerns for boaters. The carp where within 100 miles... or was it 10 miles? The old memory problem again. I'll look at my resources over the weekend and get my facts straight.

I also saw a report that they are testing for the carp DNA in places and found a positive test somewhere that disturbed me. I will find that article again and post an update. It may be that is the same article that mentioned how close to the barrier they figured the carp were. I reformatted the /conservation (http://www.greatlakesbass.com/conservation/) section so I can post more information on it now quicker.

The carp were within 10 miles of the barrier and within 50 miles of Lake Michigan is what I found. I also did hear that they had found carp DNA up the Illinois river towards Chicago.  Which means eggs have been sucked up into the ballast of shipping freighters or something, that's exactly how the goby got here too. Except I don't think the carp will be nearly as good imitations to attract smallies. :( hopefully they figure something out quick

It may have to involve something like 'The Force' ... not sure?

I didn't want to say 10 miles because that is more scary... but I thought that was what I remembered...   :-\'

My guess is that Illinois was too late with the barrier.Us flatlanders can thank Rod for his great leadership.(Glad he got booted)
Unfortunately, these are a nasty fish and will get out of control very fast.
By the way,if you ever seen video of the way they jump by the hundreds when a boat goes by...It looks cool on film but scary as hell in person, especially with a small kid in the boat.
