My first tournament of the 2009 season is in the books and it was a great day on Pontiac lake. There were 29 teams in the event and most of them had a limit, but it was the teams with a couple of fish in the 2lb range that finished in the money.
My partner Mark Clark and I were out Friday doing some looking for bedding fish and really didn't see any big fish on beds just small bucks right at the keeper size limit of 14". Neither one of us are really good at bed fishing so we had a plan for the day and it paid off with a win.
As all of the boats were blasting off it appered that the majority of the field stayed up in the bay by sellings and it had Mark and I wondering if we had missed something up there because we didn't find anything decent up there during practice on Friday. We had a few spots on the main lake we were going to try and since we were the last boat out we decided to start were ever there was an opening.
We started on the south end of the beach, an area we didn't practice, but we were sure there should be some post spawn fish with the huge spawning area of the beach. On mark's 1st cast he lost a decent keeper on a chigger craw, but it didn't take long to get our limit with the chigger craw and a drop shot case plastics worm in GP. We fished this area for another 2 hours and we were never able to upgrade our catch so we put away every rod we had except for ones rigged with the Nemesis new upskirt jig in the color Brian and I came up with earlier in the week called KevZilla.
We decided to move to the west end of the lake along the dam area were there was some deeper water near shore and look for some larger post spawn fish. Within about 50 yards of starting we had thrown back 2 14" with good upgrades of about 2 1/2 lbs each and than knew that is what we would do the rest of the day. we had the boat sitting in 10-12 feet and we would cast up to about 30 yards from shore and the fish seemed to be sitting on the first drop off of the area as we expected.
We worked this area hard the rest of day and managed to cull all of the 14" fish we caught earlier with upgrades of a few ounces.
At weigh in time we figured we didn't have a chance and that some guys had found the motherload of good sized spawners up by sellings and we were real suprised when our fish hit the scales for 9.87 lbs with a big fish of 2.75. That put us in the lead with only 3 teams remaing to weigh in and we were still in shock as we were presented with the trophy's for 1st place and Big fish.
All of our weigh in fish came on the Nemesis upskirt jig in KevZilla and we experimented throughout the day with other colors, but it was the KevZilla that they seemed to want.
Thank you Brian for taking time to make these jigs for us. I honestly belive it was the subtle variations in that color scheme that made the difference for this event and hopefully it will hold true for the rest of the season.
Nice work Kev!!!!!
Way to go KLB!!
