Post by: Bender on April 20, 2009, 01:15:10 AM
Please post up here if you are coming and if you are going as a boater or non. Maybe we can get a list together.
I'll be there with boat.

you guys might want to change that launch .I was there over the weekend and there were a bunch of logs floating and sticking up. I didn't know they called the spill way launch the ballard ramp. I would launch at metro or harley .

Sorry guys, it doesn't look like I'm gonna be able to make this one.  I'm still waiting to get the boat back from the mechanic.  I'm not gonna be able to break it in by the weekend.  The wind reports for the next week look pretty bad.  30+ mph.  Good luck!

Guys,

Food for thought for Saturday.  I have never fished St Clair this early in the year so I don't know if the bite is typically the same (late) or not but since no one has piped up about Seth's question of what time I thought that I would try to start a dialog.  The major for Saturday (and it's a good one) starts just before noon and goes till just after three.  If the bite doesn't really get going till mid morning maybe we should give thought to a meeting time of eight or so and fish till four or five.  Looks like it is going to be a beautiful day and we may as well enjoy it when we can.

Any other input?

David

I was just checking into the same thing, trying to find old posts to see what time we normally start. It seems like the crack of dawn in the past. It does look like the low will be 58, and that's what I was worried about overnight if it was getting too cold but it's not.

The other thing for us "west siders" is that there is a lot of construction coming across 96 and 696. Last weekend 696 was closed! This weekend it will be open but 1-2 lanes will be closed. I'm thinking that if we can get through there earlier it might be better. I'm the last one that likes getting up early, so I can't believe I am suggesting it.  ;D

I would rather head across town early, like Bender said to avoid the construction.  I hate getting up early, but I hate sitting in traffic on my way to the lake.

Don't know if the lot will fill up if we wait too long either?  I got there around 9 last year a couple times and the lot was full.

With the cool weather this week I am not sure what to expect for the pattern.  Usually my early season stuff in on Erie.  This time of year the fish are just starting to break out of the winter pattern on Erie.  The fish would be moving from 35' or so into the shallower 25' range over the next 3 weeks - clearly that kind of pattern won't work on LSC!  If we get some sunshine the next couple days, I hope to find a trap or jerkbait bite in the shallows!

Well if the weather holds (low wind) I'll be there as a boater.  Thanks Chris for talking me into going....  Look forward to seeing ya'll there.

Hey Guys, I drove down to the Ballard ramp today (Wednesday) and the launch apron is covered with wood and the launch area looks really mucky and dirty. Like Chris said, I think we need to move the launch.

I've been working on my boat again since another animal got into it and tore up some wiring while it was in storage. I've also been nursing a sore back the last few weeks and that has slowed me down and the progress. I want to try and get it out before the weekend to make sure it runs OK before I take somebody out. Hopefully I'll know tomorrow and also get a chance to see what the water clarity is after all the wind and rain.  ;D

Mark

PS. I can only fish until about 1:00 Saturday due to family obligations.

Move to Harley! Plenty of parking and safe ramps.

I'm guessing that the bite will be later as the water warms.
I'm also guessing that a whole bunch of guys will be headed to the launches this Saturday.  It's been a looooonnnnnggggg winter.

I'd rather have to wait for the fish, than for a parking place.

I'll be out with my buddy from work. We were going to launch at Ballard at around 7:00 am. Is that still the launch or has everyone decided to move. See you all on the lake !

I don't care that the weather man says it should be nice. . .
Bring your rainsuits!  And maybe a kite.

With strong SW winds it would make more sense to go out of Harley and fish the SW corner of Anchor Bay which is loaded with toads I am sure. Staying tight to the mile roads should work too.

BAD BAD BAD. Went out today Friday. I will not be launching at the Spill way There are trees floating down the spill way full size trees. There was 3- 4 ft waves all day. All the mile roads are chocolate milk The bay is not as bad but dark about 1 Ft visibility or less. Im up in the air about going but If I do it will be out of the north west. Just an up date.

I will not be able to make it tommorrow....I have a couple of things I need to wrap up on my boat and I am sicker than a dog....I think I got a touch of this flu going around..I may try to go out Sunday if I am feeling better...It is only going to take an hour or so to wrap up the boat...
I have been kind of watching this outing develop and trying to figure out where you guys are at on boaters it looks like you are setting pretty good...So that took some pressure off...

I would highly advise taking off at Harley or Selfridge......My buddy at work lives just down the road from the Cut off ramp and he said it is a mess...He launched his nice Champion there, but was not happy about it...

It looks like the winds are going to shift to the North East Sunday so that could make things interesting..

You can always pitch and Flip largies out of the Canals at Metro if things get too bad..They seem to always be in there no matter how dirty the water gets..

I just looked at the weather.  There are small craft warnings out through Saturday.

Are we sure we still want to do this?

We could just go to Kent Lake and join the other group from GLB.

Kent sounds good.
Lets do it!

Yeah, the water has actually gotten muddier since yesterday.

http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/modis.cgi/modis?region=e&page=1

Looks like mud moving into Anchor as well.  About the only almost decent stuff is near the Det River mouth.  As the current pulls the dirty water that will probably get trashed also.

Not sure what to do but I don't think it is worth wasting time on St Clair.

Looks like Kent is the plan.  I will be at the East Launch between 6:30 and 6:45.  David is planning to ride with me.  Jon also needs a boater, so I will take both unless we have another boater without a backseater.

If there's not an empty seat then you can ride with me. 3 in a boat on Kent is not a problem.

I was gonna have to quit early tomorrow anyways due to family obligations and with the long ride over there (and 696 being worked on) I think I'm gonna have to pass on this one. I am going to get out on Lake St. Clair somewhere for a few hours and I'll let you know how I do.

Mark, I'm glad to hear you got the word.  Nobody had your phone number.

I did leave a voice mail with Tom, but I was worried either you or he would be there at the launch wondering where the rest of us were.

Glad to hear the boat, and your back were good enough to venture out.

I didn't whack em, but I did feel the pull of a nice fish or two on the other end of my line.

My most notable fish of the day was a 12 Crappie, broad and fat.  It actually hit a 1/4 oz. ratttle bait.
