Title: Fireline Crystal
Post by: bassassasin88 on April 09, 2009, 11:44:50 PM
Has anyone tried the fireline crystal? I have a hard time believing its truly clear, doesnt really look that way. Almost to good to be true, until you get a snagged in the river with it. Might pull you out of the boat.

I have been using it for two years now. One of the highlighs was 6ft long Sturgeon on 6lb test. It is great for jigging applications for walleye as you can feel absolutely everything. I have expanded it's use to dropshotting, jerkbaits and cranks with good success.

I use it for dropshotting.  You can't beat that sensitivity.

With or without floro leader?

No leader is necessary as far as I can tell.
If you are fishing absolutely crystal clear waters in a finesse application (such as bed fishing) and you feel you need a floro leader, then by all means add one on. Personally I believe the fish can not see anything that small in diameter.

I tried it last year and didn't like it.
Was too white for me.  Sensitivity was fine, strength was fine.
Just didn't like the color.

I went back to my green Power Pro.

I use a floro leader.  Only thing I don't like is it has a tendeancy to twist.  I don't have that problem with floro.

I too use a fluro leader with the Power Pro.  I tie one about a 3 or 4' leader with a uni to uni knot.  Probably don't need to most of the time, but I do anyway.
One of the reasons I use this set up is to eliminate line twist.  I've never had a problem with any of the braids I've tried.
But, with every brand of fluoro I tried in years past, line twist was always a problem.
I thought the Crystal would be the best of both worlds.  No twist, and relatively invisible.  It was not as clear as I thought it would be.

If its a lot more sensitive than straight flouro I might have to try it. I got flouro on 2 spinning rods, looking for something for the third.

It is but I seem to have issues with it twisting and it is spooled on right.  Its only with drop shotting though.  I thought about adding a swivel but have not tried it yet.

I believe that KVD suggests using a large capacity reel, and a swivel when drop shotting on a spinning reel.

When I get the most line twist is with soft plastic jerk baits on fluoro that is spooled on spinning tackle and not swivel.

I ran braid with a 12' leader on my steelhead rod for the last several years.  So, this year, I spooled up all my rods with braid and am running a short section of flouro attached to that.  We'll see how it works.  It'll save money like crazy if it does.  I have had trouble with line twists as well and that is what led me to brain-storm on how to eliminate the problem.
