Title: KVD At DNR
Post by: Dan on March 01, 2009, 10:45:09 AM
Went down and saw KVD. As usual, he was excellent. He is an accomplished speaker and having heard him speak many times it always seems he has new material. Certainly doesn't use a canned spiel. Saw Herman down there, but missed T.Cook. I think he's avoiding me. I wrote up a little piece on my teardropbass.com blog if you're interested. Only two weeks till the next BASS and FLW events. Make sure you get those fantasy teams situated. Now's a great time to get those reels off and sent to Dave Valentine. Dave posts on the site and does a great job on reels. I've sent all of mine to him the past two years and highly recommend him. He's the Reel Man!

LOL Dan your crazy, I am definatly not avoiding you. I walked into the seminar late and had to stand way in the back against the wall. I had to wait in line alot longer than I anticipated to pay for my stuff. After the show the guys I went with headed straight to the truck because they were starving so we left right away. I got some great deals though, loaded up on Seaguar Invisx for $13.50 a spool, Yamamoto hula grubs for 5.60 a pack, and found some mismarked 1/4 oz bite me shakey heads that were 2.99 for a 25 pack and we cleaned them out of those.  :D

Dan, I was there as well.  Just wondering, but do you know what Kim Bain-Moore did wrong?

But KVD does know how to draw a crowd!

Yeah, I agree.  I like how each year he keeps his presentations relevant and doesn't say the same ole things he said last year.  I came away with some good pointers on cranking, which is one technique I want to improve this year.  I picked up a copy of the Navionics Explorer.  That is a great program.  The 3D bottom feature is awesome!  I've already found a couple spots to try that I didn't know were there before!

I was in attendance on Saturday. I was very impressed with KVD. Great speaker, seems like a pretty down to earth guy. Any one throw the redeyeshad?

Yeah, I have thrown them some.  They work pretty well.  My only complaint, and it is a pretty large one, is that I caught 1 pike and within 3 more casts, all the paint had flaked off the entire bait!!  So, then I used another one and caught one or two nice 2 1/2 lbers and within just a few more casts, all the paint had come off that one as well!  I hope Strike King is working on this issue...I sent them an e-mail about it.  They sent me replacements, but didn't mention if they were working on a fix or not.  However, if they get the paint problem fixed, it is a really good bait.

KVD is an awesome speaker. Kinda wish he would get more in depth on things but?? thats why hes the man and not giving away too many secrets. MIBASSER.. from what i gather on Kim-Bain Moore, was that in the practice period her husban was seen running the boat? The officials said that it wasnt a rule in fraction because it wasnt the official practice?? that might have been why KVD seemed to have a sour tounge on that subject? If you remember he was Dq for the same thing @ Santee Cooper. Probably causing him to lose angler of the year in 07-skeeterman-

I think another difference would be that KVD had his Co-Angler running the boat while he stood on the deck looking for beddiing fish.  If Kim Bain-Moore's husband was running the boat, he wasn't even in the tournament.

I had the same problem with the red eyed shad - used it for a couple hours and paint was completely peeling off. They need to fix that problem, hopefully they got enough feedback and have made modifications to their process this year.

He is great at everything! I got to hang out with him on Friday at BPS. In addition, I was doing Product Demos and Seminars for my sponsors. Promoting that NEW line of KVD Coffee baits from Strike King. MAN, THOSE BAITS ARE AWESOME!
;D ;D

I have thrown the Red Eye for 2 years now and your right the paint could be better.  2 years ago I had a dog fish grab one and strip all the paint off it.  The bait became a solid chrome after the paint was gone.  It turned about to be a great bait.  I caught fish on it all day that way until finally it was bitten off by another toothy critter.

It's all in the drop! And when you feal it hit a weed give it a little slack so it drops and yank it out of the weeds. works every time.

I've lost the paint off from 3 and gave up on them. They know the lures had problems but don't want to do anything to honor them. Hey what can you expect from a lure made in Costa Rica for pennies?
I have seen that KVD changes all of his hooks and used the Bomber Fat Free Shad, I think thats the proper name, in Sexy Shad a lot last year, I remember Zona even saying he used it to win on Kentucky and 2nd on Wheeler during the Bassmaster TV show. Anyone ever tried it?

By the way... I talked to Randy VanDam today.  KVD will NOT be at the annual spring sale at D&R in April.  He will be on spring break with his wife and kids.  Gerald Swindle will be there though... along with a few others.

But KVD is scheduled to be at the Grand Rapids show in two weeks.

Hey guys,  If you want something similar to the red eye shad, try Xcalibur rattlebaits.  Right now I can't remember if they have a certain name, but I think the number is Xr50.  I bought one to try last spring.  It had a purple back and some chartruse and orange on the belly.  I caught a ton of fish on it without the paint coming off.  I caught smallies on St. Clair with it, lg mouth, pike and walleye on other lakes.  That is until another Pike decided to bite it off on Hamlin lake.  I bought a half dozen more after that.  I think they have a sex shad color also.
