Going threw some tackle today and got into one of my crankbait boxes. some of my cranks have some rust spots on them anyone have a trick to clean them up a little better. i used some hard water, rust stuff i found under the sink but didnt get it all off??-skeeterman-ps what do you guys use to keep your cranks in??
you might try a scotch-brite pad, but be careful it will go into the finish if you go at it too hard.
also - keep silica gel packets that you find sometimes in packaging for electronics or clothes. They are those little teabag like packets the feel like they are full of small rocks. Toss a couple of those in your hard bait boxes and they will draw the moisture out and help keep the hooks from rusting in the first place.
I agree with thedude on the silica gel packs. I have been using those for years in my tackle boxes to keep water out. They work...........period..........!!!!!!! ;)

I think I need to find a bulk source for those little bags...?
Here's a site to but the desiccant packs at. Or you can get them at the local Hobby or electronics store.

Try removing the rust with a toothbrush and toothpaste, or some baking soda. I also use the silica packs in all of my boxes (terminal tackle, crankbaits, topwater, etc).
Navel Jelly is another good rust disolver

You can buy them at Radio Shack although I am not sure if they had them there last time I went. I have bought them here in Livonia at a more high end electronics shop that has many more components for building up circuit boards. And at this moment I can't remember the name of that store either. Must be all the fishing on the brain this weekend from the Ultimate Fishing Show. If I think of it.......wait............I think it's Midwest Electronics on Plymouth Road in Livonia. I will stop there this next week to check it out.

I clean up my crankbaits and spinnerbait blades with Flitz metal polish. Does a great job and makes them shine like new.
I've found wd-40 and a toothbrush to work well. I would also recommend switching to all nickel plated hooks and stainless split rings. The copper split rings that come on some Rapalas are the worst for rust. I haven't had the rust problem since I made these changes, expensive but worth it. IMO janns netcraft has the best/strongest split rings out there.
