Title: Power Head Blues
Post by: LAPORTE on December 29, 2008, 08:50:48 PM
Hey all,  I picked up a newer boat 1999 186 SX Skeeter from one of the guys on the forum here. It's a very nice boat. I purchased it knowing the motor had issues. Being the knuckle head that I am ;D I can fix anything.... this one might be over my head. Has anyone ever rebuilt a powerhead ? the cylinders look fine but the cranks is smoked on one of the rod journals. the questions I think I face now is do I put a new crank, rod, piston rings gaskets etc....  or a new power head from yammie or send this one out to be rebuilt. ? Please share any
ideas you may have... and yes Ill even take the smart (you know what) answers as well.

She is smoked good fishstick.... lol

Hey Don, one thing I thought of is fixing the damaged parts is one thing, but what caused the damage in the first place?

Don-

Congrats on the new boat.  Hopefully the deal was good enough to allow some serious $$ to be spent on the motor.

I have had a main bearing go bad on 2 different motors.  One time, the crank was trashed along with 2 cylinders, the other time only the bearing went and no other major damage was inflicted.  Even with the motor that had minor damage, I still honed/ringed it as PM since it was a total rebuild to swap the lower main.

The motor that was really trashed, I rebuilt myself.  Lots of work, but it saved some serious coin.  I actually had the crank rebuilt by a guy in CA for about $300 (new crank was almost 1500 for that motor) and I think about $900 in pistons, bearings, rings.

If you get a rebuilt powerhead, get a factory reman with a warranty and make sure whatever path you go, break it in to the BOOK.  No exceptions, no shortcuts!

Members - just a reminder that I strongly suggest you not place personal information on the forum such as phone numbers, addresses, email (you can block the visibility of your email address in your profile while members can still email you) and other identifiers. Unless you want everyone in the world to know, it is best to send a private message to the person (others, including myself, cannot get into your PM's). If you have a business need to have your contacts public, that is understandable, of course.

This forum and web site is under constant browsing by persons all over the world, particularly from robots and spiders of more than questionable purpose from Eastern Europe, China and other parts of the world who I am constantly working to block. They are trying to harvest email addresses and personal information. These persons are able to adjust faster than I can - they keep much more knowledgeable persons than myself on the defensive. It is best not to provide the opportunity for any of these 'people' to get a hold of any of your personal information if you can help it.

I'm having a particular problem with the Ukraine right now with porn spammers who are known to be behind a large number of Internet problems including identity theft. Sorry to jump in here, but I do not want to have your time spent here or on any web site used against you by persons with bad intent. Just an unfortunate reality of the Internet that I would like to do my part to try to keep 'behind the scenes' as much as possible.

I'll leave it up to all of you to decide (unless it is something like an SSN), but I want to make sure you're aware of it - I'm in the process of adding this to the site information and saw the example here. Just remember, there are persons and programs from all over the world that review these postings. Thanks for being members and for always jumping in to help a fellow member and angler out.
