Title: New Brighton MI Ban Might Be a Problem for Some?
Post by: djkimmel on December 27, 2008, 01:52:37 AM
Did you read about this? I hope a few people I know who live and work in the Brighton area did! They could be in for an unpleasant surprise!?! ;D

Apparently, a new local ordinance effective January 2nd, 2009, will make it illegal to be annoying in Brighton MI!! You heard me right... the Brighton city council is allowing police in the Livingston County community to ticket and fine anyone who is annoying in public "by word of mouth, sign or motions."

Yikes!! If you not having a good day... you better stay home and stay off the phone!! (No sign language either ;D)

Sounds to me like the Brighton City Council does not have enough to do, so they write ridiculous ordinances.  What is this world coming too.  I wonder if this ordinance will stand up against our first amendment rights to freedom of speech???  My guess would be no and this ordinance is unconstitutional.  I am sure that any Federal Judge would throw this out.

There was a quote from the city attorney or someone like that saying they expected some First Amendment rights challenges, but they would handle them as they come along, case by case.

I just wonder if it has been a slow time in Brighton. Councils and legislatures need to be doing something... so when they don't have something important to do... they make something up or take on the latest single cause maybe of a squeaky wheel. Royal Oak was apparently the first to adopt a similar ordinance.

This is an example of why citizens of a democracy need to take some of their time and stay involved.

As far as Obama and a new President, I would think it wise to wait and see what actually happens rather than worry about things that haven't happened and may not happen. Things never happen the way both sides tell their respective supporters things will happen to whip them up.

I used to race motorcycles in Brighton at Mustang Acres which was owned by the Iron Mustangs a biker club.  wonder what this city council would have thought about them.

glad Kent lake is east of brighton.  i have uttered a few choice words on that lake.

Don't bet on it!!!! Especially not the Federal Judges soon to be appointed by YOUR boy Obama !!! :o

I would say his appointments so far show he is looking for experience and has crossed both conservative, central and liberal lines in his selections...I would expect more of the same in his appointments for the judicial branch..

I'm just trying to figure out some way to use this new law to my advantage.  ;D

I live just outside of the city limits though. In all fairness from what I have gathered the spirit of the law is more to address nuisances rather than annoying people. They just did a horrible job of wording it.

Well you know what 'they' say about politics and religion... guess I should know better... I try to give you guys (and don't forget the gals) as much leeway as I can so I don't get too many email about censorship in the free US... sometimes it works... and sometimes it doesn't. Remember, we are ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! Nothing changes that. Nothing.

Moving on...

THAT is always the question... isn't it? Be involved. Don't let it just happen (just a general statement... not a call to action in Brighton :) )

Well put dj.  When something is written it is very hard to interpret what the author means.  The conotation "boy" could be taken any way the reader reads it.  I don't like the conotation at all merely because I am no one's "boy" except for my Dad's....and no one is mine except for my son.  I find it to be somewhat disrespectful no matter how it is used and we as adults should probably know better.  Sometimes that is not always the case.  Again moving on to more important stuff like bassfishing.    :D
