Title: Oct. 4th event
Post by: Revtro on September 22, 2008, 09:21:00 AM
Well, the 4th is almost here.  We're supposed to launch at St. Jean.  The South Shore wasn't fishing well at all on Saturday.  The water quality wasn't bad, but the fish just weren't there.

I suggest if the weather allows, we launch at Elizabeth Park.  If the weather doesn't allow, maybe we should launch at Harley or Marine City and fish North.  Is everybody ok with either plan depending on the weather?

Langer and I fished Erie on Sunday, mainly out the mouth of the river and the first dumping grounds area southwest of the light. Fishing was fairly slow and we caught quite a few very short ones, a sheephead, a nice perch, and a two very nice bass. The lake started out smooth, then got rough, then calmed down again after noon. There were quite a few other boats in that area as well, but I don't know how they did.
We launched out of Erie Metropark but Elizabeth should be good too since it is just up a little bit.
Tom, did you guys try out by Peche Island and around the river area?

No, it was so dead on the SS that we just gave up on the area and moved North.

Erie Metropark or Elizabeth...doesn't matter to me.

Well, since no one is weighing in on this event, I'll go ahead and take the bull by the horns here.  I don't know about ya'll, but I'm fishing the 4th.  My plan is to watch the weather/wind on Friday and see what Lake Erie is going to be doing on Saturday.  If the wind reports are favorable, I will be launching out of Elizabeth Park since I can use my DNR sticker there.  I will be launching at 7:30am.

If the weather does not cooperate, I will choose instead to launch at the North Channel Ramp.  I was up in the river on Saturday and caught about a dozen or so.  It seems like the river is starting to stabilize and hopefully there are some fish to be caught around Fawn, etc.  One of the more encouraging signs was the report of a very good Largemouth bite that day from another angler who was out there with us. So if Erie is a bust, I'll be up there.

I know Jack can't make it because he has a previous commitment.  But whoever else is gonna fish on Saturday, please post.

Please check back here Friday night for a final determination on whether we'll be at Erie or the N. Channel.  I'll keep a close eye on things.  If any of you who are more familiar with Erie care to help out with the decision, please let me know if you're willing to help interpret what the weather looks to be doing that day.

Elizabeth is a wayne county park, not a state park. It cost 5 bucks to launch there

Ahh.  Didn't know that.  It's listed on the DNR website as a DNR launch.  Either way $5 is probably less than a Metropark will charge.  Thanks for letting us know about the cost.

I'll be there. Looks like it was some tough fishing judging by the BFL weights. I still can't wait to get back to Erie, maybe check out some new areas. Last time we had the camera out and had fun looking at all the fish when they were not biting. They just stack up right around the rock piles.

I wouldn't mind going as a non-boater if theres room and the weather cooperates.  Mike and I were just down there (Erie) and didn't do very well.

I haven't shown up for anything this year, except the message boards from time to time, so why buck a trend?

My daughter is marching in the homecoming parade (band) so I will be with the family Saturday.

I hope you guys do great on Erie!

That's what happens when you live in the U.P. David. ha ha  ;D

If we move it to the N. Channel due to weather, maybe you can make it down.  Or, if you want to spend the night at my place on Friday night and ride out to Erie with me in the AM, you're welcome to do that as well.

Sun up isn't until after 7:15 or so, so 7am at the McDonald's sounds good.  I've never launched at Elizabeth, so can you tell us where the McDonald's is?

Boater/Non
Chris/Don
Tom/Steve L.
Mike Mc/Mark

I have another possible nonboater if another boater cares to join us for the day.  Seth??? Can we talk ya into it?

The McDonald's is on the corner of Fort & Vanhorn. The ramp is about 1/4 mile away

I'll be there at 7.  Is the best way to take 75 and get off at VanHorn??

The weather looks ok for the AM.  It'll be COLD, but they're calling for 10kts or less wind and wave heights 5 Miles out to be 2ft or less.  Sounds like a decent day for it with plenty of sun (which we'll need).  ;D

I am not so sure that Van Horn has an exit.....I would take the West road exit..Follow east to the light at Allen, turn Right (south) to Vanhorn then Left..(back east) until it dead ends then turn left then a quick right at the next light right into the Marina....

Rev, don't worry about a boater for me...Actually that kind of helped make up my decision...My dad is sicker than I thought so I have to get things done around my house so I can head up there next weekend (Cadillac) and get some things done around his Houses...

Yep.  Just found out about construction that closes I-75 too, but I got directions to avoid it.  I'll be at McDonald's at 7.  See ya then!
