I am taking my two boys on a camping trip to ST HELEN I was hopping I could get some info, on what to use or were to go on the lake and catch some BASS.
I have a cabin on lake ST Helen. it all depends on what lake you are going to fish 1 2 or 3 . If bass is your target I have found lake 1 and 2 to be the best Im sure others may not agree but I fish the weed edges with in line spinners or a pig and jig . you might also try a buzz bait around the pads bass pro triple clickers work well. stop in Melcoms bait and tackle when you get there he is pretty good at telling how and were to find the fish hope I could help
I fished there for a 2 day tournament a couple of Augusts ago. Day one was sunny, and I got 13 something under docks. Day 2 got cloudy, and I dodn't know anything else about the place, so all I had was docks. Only caught one fish, 5 1/2 pounder. Dropped from 1st to 5th. It seems like I remeber one guy getting a bunch of fish in the canal that runs off the west lake on the opposite shoreline south of the channel to the other lakes. Another guy did good by fishing by or in the river that is in the east lake. I know some people who fish the hole in the west lake all day. Best I can do, but my directions may be off, and it was a few years ago.
This lake receives a tremendous amount of pressure and may be frustrating for your boys.......however...having said that....if the fish turn on for you......your boys will never forget it.
It appears they sprayed the lake again to kill the grass. This has been an on going problem for a few years. The most important thing to do is find good, green milfoil grass. If you can't find good milfoil grass.....look for the cabbage patches......the thicker..the better...especially if it's one big clump with open water around it.
Lizards work very well in St. Helen (6" Zoom Scuppernogg)
Jig with plastic or pork (Black & Blue....is there any other color)
Senkos (smoke w/purple flake and Yamamoto color #925)
Crankbaits (shallow baby minus 1 & Rapala DT 6
Spinnerbaits (your choice......lots of pike!)
Frogs in the pads (no color preferrence)
Sweet Beavers (Black & Blue / Big Texan)
If you do not get any bites in the pads with the frog..........try 10 yards out in front of the pads with the frog & other baits.
Good luck & hope you and your boys have fun..........I know I did. ;)
BS ;)
