I was out fishing with my cousin on Saturday. We were out on the water shortly after 6. Nothing but dinks the first hour. I think there was a tournament going on, qutie a few boats. Water temp ranged from 74-76 degrees.
I got a 19 inch smallmouth on an X-Rap in about 10 ft of water, an excellent fight, my personal best smallie. We kept following the break around, saw lots of minnows getting busted at the surface, couldn't get anything using crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwater....
So we moved back to the 10' flat where I caught the smallie, and I decided to try deeper so I switched to a Carolina rig and that seemed to be the trick that morning. I caught four largemouth on the flat and my cousin got two. It didn't seem to matter what bait was on the Carolina rig; worm, creature bait, lizard, various colors, they were all working. All the largemouth were 14-16 inches, and fat. Some of the bites were really light.
We called it a day around 11:15 or so, pretty satisfied that we caught a good set of quality fish.
Sounds like a great day! Happy to see that the fish are a little more active than last Tuesday when it was hard to get bit.
