Title: Burt Lake 5/24
Post by: MIBasser on May 27, 2008, 06:32:50 PM
Well I was able to get up to Burt Lake on Saturday morning.  First as most of you know it was COLD!!  38 air temp at 6:30 in the morning.   So I pulled some maps off the web that showed some points, bays, and weeds and thought that would be a good place to start.  I first pull up to Kings point area and right off the bat I get bit, only it was a pike.  A nice one too!  From there I fool around for a while switching baits and get nothing.  I then went to Colonial Point area and catch my first smallie, 15", not all that big.  Well, after running back down lake and with the thought of going to Mullett I head down the river for a few and then decide not to go there.  Time was running out and didn't want mom to watch my daughter all day long.  So it's back up to Poverty bay one more time.  Well, after a lot of looking and casting I finally get a pig.  17 1/2" on the board.  Nothing going on after that and it was time to get off the lake.

So the water was still cold.  I was finding a lot of 55 to 58 degree water, very clear, some fish on beds but not that many.  Did see a few just cruising around.  I'm guessing a nice warm up will make the lake great.  If I could ever figure out how to post pic's, I would post them but it's always saying that they are too big???.....

Heck that is as warm as St. Clair and most of these fish are done spawning. Looks like this BFL upcoming may be a post spawn bite.

MadWags,  it's possible however last year it was 70/80's up there for most of May and the first of June and the BFL was in mid june with smallies bedding all over.  It slips my mind what the water temps were last year but I have to believe they were alot higher at this time last year than this year.

My uneducated guess is that they will be in all 3 stages with (I hope) the majority bedding down!!

A man can dream right?

Im gonna have to go with NO on the post spawn deal. Im from Nw Indiana and fish are still on beds here. I was in Cadillac this last weekend it was a strange deal. the bucks were up on beds fanning and getting ready but the temps in the air are shifting too much! I think some fish have spawned but a big way is on its way!!!! If we cant get some steady temps it will be fire!!!! Ill be on burt and mullet all nest week so hopefully they show themselves and things get going. hope to see ya ll up there-skeeterman-

Fished Cadillac and Mitchell and they are just starting to bed. Mid June is when they will be bedding, trust me. Next full moon.

King's Pt is BIGtime pike and musky area. Big and toothy spinnerbait benders... I try to avoid that area... except when I have a spinnerbait that needs to be PUNISHED!!! 'Bad spinnerbait... bad!' ;D

Heck, I'm still finding STAGING, grouped up female largemouths (NICE ones!!) on Lake Ovid this weekend. Not the norm, let me tell you.

Even down here, I caught 3 female largies still carrying eggs on Sunday evening. I think it's because we had a cool May, plus the reservoir I usually fish has just starting clearing up.

They were just starting to come up on beds this past weekend...They will be bedding heavily by the BFL...The SM bass up north will spawn Late into June and even into July...
We found our fish Bedding in 6-8 ft of water.
