Title: Finally made it out on Hamlin
Post by: spinninbug on May 27, 2008, 11:10:52 AM
Well about 4 yesterday afternoon,  we decided to venture out in the wind and go to Hamlin.  We get there and unload and hubby looks at me and says where do you want to go?  Well I said to the south end of course,  he looks around and says it's pretty windy,  I know and I don't care I want to go to the south end.  He just shakes his head and off we go.  With the wind coming straight out of the south I knew it was going to be intereting to say the least.  Turns out it wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be.  However,  it was 80 degrees on the house thermometer when we left so I didn't dress any different then I was at home,  big big big mistake,  I only grew up on the lake you would think I would know better.  So we get through the narrows and he says ok where would you like to go,  typical of me I said I don't care,  his response was then why did you want to come down here,  well I just like it down here I don't really care where we fish.  So he goes to a smallie spot we fish.  So we stop and I imiediately jump up and open up the storage box with my gortex in it and threw them on.  And started fishing.  We ended up have a great time,  caught a few smallies and he decides we are going to move over by the state park.  Here it was a little nicer a little more protected so the wind wasn't that bad.  We were just kind of looking around and enjoying the day,  he picked up a nice walleye on a jerk bait and all of a sudden,  he looks over the dunes and what looks like a big thunderhead cloud is coming over the dunes.  It's not a thunderhead though it's fog,  it was erie looking and then it's coming over the west side of the lake too.  I said this just doesn't make any sense the wind is straight out of the south,  well all of a sudden,  the lake changes, the wind changes and is now coming straight out of the north, the fog starts rolling in and the temp dropped about 15 degrees.  (Now mind you I have flip flops on with no socks  :D)  The sun is still shining and the fog is just rolling in.  I got so cold that I just started packing up my rods and putting them away,  I was just going to sit and try to keep as warm as I possibly could (Ok there was no chance of this and I knew it)  but I wasn't going to be a baby and make him quit fishing.  So I sat and he fished for a few more minutes and then he packed it up and we headed for the launch.

All in all it was a good day on the water considering.

So after we were entertained at the boat launch with some people trying to load their boat we finally got loaded and headed for home.

So I said to him,  that it had been a pretty nice day out there.  Now mind you it's almost June and this is our first time out there,  I've been naggin and I do mean nagging,  even whining because we hadn't be out there yet.  We are usually out there the first of may at the latest.  And his remark to me was,  yep it wasn't half bad,  are you happy now that you got your Hamlin fix!!  Can't help it it's my favoite lake and I love to fish it.  I know it's not always his favorite to go to, but when we first started dating he hated fishing that lake,  now he doesn't mind it so much, (I made him go and often) we usually do pretty good.  I just love being on the water there,  brings back alot of great memories for me.  Like fishing with my dad when I was a kid.  Sometimes I will be just sitting there looking around and he will look at me and say why aren't you fishing,  well I'm just remembering.....  he just shakes his head.

Hi Wendy,

Jeff here.  I'm new to the site and saw your post.  I'm taking the family to Hamlin tomorrow morning. (Sunday)  We'll be there for the week.  Well, except for an overnight trip to Traverse City.  I've also got a lot of memories of Hamlin Lake.  :)  I've been going there since I was a toddler.  Thing is I'm still learning the lake.  At least for bass.  I never really fished the main lake much until we bought in at the North Bayou Resort in 2001.  Give me a call if you want to exchange stories or get a chance to fish Hamlin this week. Leave a message for me at the North Bayou Resort  231-845-5820
