Anyone know of some open water anywhere? I was kind of hoping to maybe sneak out tomorrow and get some time on the water!! I would prefer inland Oakland county type water.
When I had my appendix out the Doc said I could not lift anything...yada yada yada....but he said nothing specifically about not taking the boat out!!!! I am ready!!
Seth
Hey Seth- Belleville is open for the most part ?
Don L
st-clair and erie look open.
I'm putting in at Lobdell tomorrow to blow out the fogging oil
Just left the access at lobdell and theres 40/50 feet of ice between shore and open water , thick enough to walk on , but its open from the dam through to bennet lake it looks like .
Well, maybe not tomorrow ;D
Last Wednesday, as I headed for DC, the first open water I saw was near Youngstown. Three guys were fishing from a small row boat on a pond.
When we returned yesterday, the ponds about 15 minutes east of Toledo were all melted.
It's headed this way.
Spring that is.
I can't take it anymore!!!!!! I need to get on the water and I'm thinking we have at least two weeks to go if not longer :(
Even thougth they are saying it's going to be 49 on monday with a chance of thunderstorms, it's going to take a while to melt all this ice we have up here.
Ice is gone for the most part down here. Our fist tourni is next sunday on long lake. The state is calling this lake one of the top ten for the state for bass.According too their electro shock surveys. Going out to prefish tommorow. Would go today but our friends wife of 48 years died unexpectedly on the 25th. Funeral today. Found here in the bathroom gone. had to be real fast. This could be a prayer request for Bruce and his daughters without being to direct.
Anyway can't wait to blow out the fog and wet a line. Lots of new stuff to try out this weekend. aquaview, bsx unit and new humminbird gps from last year that I didnt have enough time with to be comfortable.
Lots to learn on new water.
good luck all

Down where??? What state??? ??? ??? ??? I'm jealous.
BD ;D
No open water in North Oakland anywhere, still ice fishing last night, shore ice is getting tricky. But still 12" thick once you're off the shore ice. With the weather this week hoping to have the boat in by next Sunday......maybe...
Just left lobdell access , guess what? Mark Semple put his stratos in on the back side , idled around front , and used it like a ice breaker to clear out the launch !!!!! It looks like its open from the dam in Argentine all the way to Bennet . Now I just hope it stays this warm tomorrow.
I stopped by on the way home from Wonderland and it looked like you could break through. I'm out there tomorrow!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
OPPs, Sily me. Going out prefishing today and didnt say were we are. We are in the akron/canton area which is south of cleveland(ohio) about 35 or 45 miles. We will be on long lake today which is part of the portage lakes system. If you look at a sat photo it is south of 224 and west of 77. It looks like a goats head with horns.(more like a kodu's head with horns) It is also the only one being fed by an active river(the tuscarawas river). This lake is the northern most lake of the portage system. the portage lakes flow from south to north so this lake can have some current at times. two weeks ago after all the snow when it rained this lake was the first to clear out the ice and all the lowland below the dam/spillway was flooded. Lets see what today holds.
later ya'll

Yep, we've been ice free for a couple weeks over here ourselves. Walleyes are being caught in both the Maumee and Sandusky. I was out yesterday on our little local reservoir and the water temps are high 40's and man are those bass hungry.
Cass Lake had ice on it yesterday, and much of those other lakes like Union, Oakland/Woodhull still had ice on them. I went crusin up around Pontiac/Waterford and all I saw was ICE!!!
Went to Lobdell this morning. Got the boat in the water and started up the motor to find my feed hose to the water pressue gage was leaking pretty good. I took the dash apart and found that the hose had just come off. 10 minutes later I was idling up the channel to Bennett. When I was sure there wasn't anything floating in the channel I turned to the north and opened it up. Man did that feel good!!
I took out some of my new equipment and threw some lures for a while until I started to freeze up. Managed to try out the KaRu Vibra-spin. Pretty impressive!
I did spend a while breaking up the rest of the ice around the launch so now there is a place to beach your boat.
Drove by several smaller Oakland County lakes this weekend. All had Ice on them. Saw no open water. The rain will help.
How long is the ice fishing season up north? This link is the sattelite image from yesterday, you can see Burt/Mullet and other inland lakes still very much ice covered. Seems weird to me for April.

I drove by Half Moon today. It was still pretty much iced up. I was also on Lobdell today. It is 99.9% ice free! Let the good times roll!

Went to Kent today. Pretty much ice free from what I saw. West ramp is no good due to low water. East ramp, I would only use the far right slot. They started to raise the water a couple of days ago so the launches should start to improve over the next couple of weeks.
wind this evening broke the ice on most of the north oakland lakes this afternoon. Very little ice left, has all drifted to the wind blown shore, should be totally ice free by wed....Dont know if i can have the boat ready in time, just picked it up yesterday.
I'm new to this site and I wanted to say hello to everyone. I actually heard about this while fishing Lobdell Sat. and today. I was asked by two different guys if I was a member of this site. I was in my boat on sat, 88 tracker tournament 18', and my buddy's polar craft today. So to the guys that asked, yes, i am a member now. Looking forward to talking with you guys.

Hi Nelson , glad to see your on board , that was me in Ranger monday . I know you'll like this site and enjoy reading some of these guys stories . Do you fish any tournaments or just fish for aggravation/fun ?.........Charles

ebond - thanks for the heads up - i would hate to target a species out of season! That would be just tragic. :)

I have fished a few small tourneys when I was going to school in Indiana, but I have never fished any up here and I am looking to get into some local ones to get my "feet wet" so to say. I know there are tourneys every wed. at lobdell and I am sure I will do a few of those. I am not looking to get on a trail just yet, I want to fish with some local clubs near that area. Do any of you have any suggestions? How did you guys end up doing on Hoisington after we passed you?
Nelson , check Other bass tournaments listed in the tournaments board, Roy Randolphs list , or if your up to going to kent lake , in kensington metro park , McCarter has a tournament every other tuesday . Its listed there also . Plus theres a tournament on Ponemah every tuesday . Have you been on Lake St Clair yet ? I mention this because the DK Open is coming up I think may 10 or so , and its on LSC . Great chance to check it out , 30/40 smallies per day are not uncommon at that time of year , and going in a group is a good way to experience for the first time . You can sign up on this site , its a paper tournament I believe , inexpensive , and one four pounder is worth the trip!!!!!
OOOOPS! DK open May 3rd. But check it out .
Hi Nelson,
Check out the bass clubs section of the boards here too. There are few that might interest you including The Eastside Bass Anglers which is the club I'm in.
