Title: harris chain gear stolen
Post by: bassinjeff on March 07, 2008, 12:08:33 AM
:oGlen Delong had rods, reels, and bait stolen during practice. Glen finished fourth last year on harris. It's not cool to steal from anyone. But to steal a guy's fishing gear you need a special punishment, a whipping from each rod he stole and no fishing license anywhere ever.

Is it me or my computer but where is the rest of this "story". It seems like we entered in the middle of this conversation.
By the way we lost a big plano box full of hooks and jig heads last year. I hope whoever got them gets more use and enjoyment out of them than I would have.......NOT!
Now we don't leave the boat alone until its in the garage or tightly buttoned up.
Some time in the next couple of months we will have most of them replaced for this next season.

As a pastor I can say with a certain amount of theological certainty that there will be a special place in he11 for people who steal fishing gear.   >:(  A very special place indeed!

Seriously though, a few years ago at Harley Ensign during the BASS state championship, I had a Palm Pilot and Digital Camera stolen out of my boat's glove compartment.  Glad it wasn't the fishing gear!

PS.  I like the caning idea with the stolen rods.  Er.. I mean forgive and forget...yeah, that's what I'm supposed to say.  Nah, forget it...TIME FOR THE BEAT DOWN!

Ha ha that's funny...when I posted this it changed he11 to heck.  funny.

When we were down in Leesburg fishing in November the local bait shop told us to be very careful where we parked. Lots of thefts in that area. If you're ever down there stop in the "Cane Pole." Goods guys, lots of good tackle and they're very helpful.

Does anyone know of a good security system for bass boats?

I don't like to lock my compartments - locks are only for honest folks.  If someone wants get in bad enough, they will.  They will not only steal my stuff, but they would also tear up the boat.

I would just like something that if the boat cover gets moved or taken off, all sorts of bells/sirens go off.

they have an vehicle protection system in South Africa that would be nice to have on a boat.  Bascially, if someone messes with the vehicle, the car has a pre recorded voice that warns the person to step away from the vehicle.  If the person doesnt listen, it toasts them with a flame thrower.  I seen some actuall footage of it on a test dummy.  Reminded me of roasting marshmallows as a kid.  I think that is a fair punishment for a theif.  Mess with my stuff, i will burn your face off with my aftermarket flamethrower, punk b!

Some Bass Cats come with an alarm system..If you open a locker it will set an alarm off...I have yet to test mine out yet....I think it is just a mercury switch or whatever on the inside of the locker..I don't think it would be very hard to rig something up..
I agree 100 percent with Seth...I would never use a Loc-r bar or any type of physical lock...I have seen some of the damage on other sites that thieves can do with crow bars..

According to bassfan.com, Charlie Hartley also had a bunch of gear stolen from his boat prior to the tournament.  DeLong and Hartley had their boats parked side by side earlier in the week when this occurred.  But I guess they were each able to borrow equipment from other anglers.  Hopefully Karma will kick in for the thieves...

There is a big article in the new Bass and Walleye boats magazine on securing a Bass boat...

Gun Lake stole about 60$ worth of sweet beavers right out of my plano tray and it was not cool.

Gun Lake: If you're out there reading this... you can go to &^#@!!! Just because the tray was open and sitting on the front deck of a moving bass boat, doesn't mean you can just take them.

If we every cross paths again, i'm gonna throw down.

I had a jacket stolen last year at the One on One at Lobdell.  I went up to the lot to get the trailer and when I came back the jacket which had been on the floor was gone.  I am glad I locked all the rod lockers and compartments.  Luckily..........

It would actually be really easy (I think) to rig up an automotive alarm to your campartment lids.   Using mercury switches just like they would use on a truck cap.  Hmmmm.....might be a good idea.

Not to change the subject, but last night my wife had her MP3 player stolen out of her car.  Grrr.  People who steal suck.

Bought my wife a new stereo for her car a few years back, put it in around Christmas, less than 2 weeks later the window was shattered and the trunk released, speakers and amplifier gone.  Funny they left the cash and cd's in the car, just went after the speakers. >:(

My wife keeps telling me these 'people' (I don't call them people) will pay one way or the other. I'm not as good a person as her. I hope she is right, but I still enjoy movies where the bad guys pay. "My job is to arrange the meeting..."

I seem to remember seeing a security system rigged to certain bass boat covers that set off an alarm when the cover was removed. I believe it could do more for the compartments too. Anyone remember any details on that?

In high school I had 3 stereos stolen out of my firebird, each time they pulled the ashtray out and reached under the dash through the opening and pushed the stereo out. I soldered razor blades to the bottom of stereo number 4, amazingly enough my problems ended.
Made it real easy to spot the thief, the one with four band-aids on his fingertips. Turned out to be the kids at the local car stereo shop. They were getting info from the glove boxes when they installed the stereos.

Yep..........it's called the "Smith & Wesson theft stopper".   Comes in 2 styles........357 or 44 mag.

My personal favorite is the Firestorm .40 cal. enema. That's when you catch the thieving b****** with his head down in your boat/vehicle, and ...

You get the picture.

Seth, in addition to the Loc-R-Bar, I think that I will get one of these: http://www.business-home-protection.com/catalog/item/4492402/4508580.htm

It's a motion detecting alarm with a audible alarm and strobe. You can attach it to the side of the console, and it will trigger if someone attempts to remove the cover. If your boat is parked in a hotel parking lot, it should get someones attention.

Another option is a baby monitor. Place the transmitter somewhere in the boat, and the receiver next to your bed. I've seen some with up to 2000' range.

That baby monitor is a great idea when you are overnighting it in a hotel....I think I still have a couple lying around..

Seth,
Remember you Gramps's little red car? ;D You touch it and the siren, horn and flashing lights went off.  :o :oSo sensitive the wind even set it off. About the only thing it didn't do was give you a shock!
Hey maybe that's the answer, hot wire the latches

The only downside to a baby monitor is you will hear every little thing that happens near your boat.  I bet the sound of a guy slamming his car door two spaces over will sound great being piped through a baby monitor at 3am...

I talked to Glen on Sunday.  Unbelievable that no one saw this crime.. just out of camera view too!   >:(
Karl packaged up a few hundred dollars of KaRu Lures for Glen to use this season (total assortment of what we got!).  He was given by the other anglers a bunch of rods/reels/hooks/line and sinkers to get him thru the year but getting used to someone elses equipment at that level will be a little tough a few days before an Elite Series Tourney!

I use a rod locker. I figure if I'm at a hotel and am locked up, it's harder than the boat next to mine. Why spend the time to mess with mine when there are easier targets!
